Unhappy 94 PSD will hardly run

Got up today and went out to let my truck warm up while I went to brush my teeth. Truck started right up and purred along. Went up stairs and just as I put the brush in my mouth I heard the truck laboring. Ran out to it. Tach read 8-900 rpms. But it sounded as if it was under a load lugged to those rpms. Kind of like a rod knocking hard. Check engine light was on too. I turned it off. Restarted no problem and ran smooth for about a second then it went back to the problem. Did this a few times with the same results.

It was about 20-25f outside. I just installed a pyro on Saturday about 1/2 inch from the start of the DP. I don't think the pyro is the problem but stranger things have happened to me before. Truck was not plugged in. Pyro read about 210 degrees.

It would spool up but VERY slowly. Had to move it so I could get my F-150 out of the drive to go to work. Thing had no power, had to use low range.

Any ideas?

Thanks

CPS sensor seems to be a good place to start checking for power problems.

Could be fuel gelling. If you don't have a good blend of fuel 20-25 degrees can cause a problem. Have you had this problem before in cold weather? Could be the CMP sensor (not "CPS") but that isn't likely since it usually doesn't throw a code when it goes.

Ok heres and update. I plugged it in before I left for work in my other rig. Came home at lunch and started it up. Ran fine so I let it idle and started to walk inside to grab lunch. Then it started again. I turned it off, restarted it and it ran fine for about 30 seconds the back to the problem for about 5 seconds then fine again. Let it idle as I ate lunch and took it back to work. No problem. Plugged in at work and came home no problem. (work is only 1.1 miles away)

What is the CMP sensor? I've never encountered this problem before. Maybe I need to dump in some fuel additive. Hopefully just some bad fuel. Time for a new fuel filter anyways.

Try the fuel additive first, something like Standyne Performance Formula. The CMP sensor is the camshaft position sensor. It's notorious for going bad on these engines and symptoms are usually a stalling out or hesitation in the engine. It usually does not throw a code, but sometimes it will.

I have bad news. Now the engine will never idle smooth. I pulled it in the garage and took out the fuel filter. Now I have only had this truck since the first of the year and only put 8000 miles on it. 254,000 now.

I'm kicking myself for not changing the fuel filter sooner. There is quite a bit of grit in the sperator. I drained it out completely. Now the wire it the bottom of the filter mount is loose. It is connected at the back where it connects to the wire but the tack welds hlding it down are broke. I guessing this is the water sensor? Anyways the rubber grommet at the bottom of the filter was cracked from the metal bottom of the filter. Looks like it could have let small amount of unfiltered fuel by. So know I'm thinking some injectors may be affected.

I'm going to clean the bowl out tonight and get a filter tomorrow. I poured fuel additives in the tank and will put some in the bowl. See if it helps.

I'm not sure what wire you're talking about, but that may be to heat the fuel.

Well that wire is the fuel heater wire. I figured it out after I posted last. I cleaned out the bowl and after I get done here I'm going to get a filter. I don't think it will save me now since I'm figuring that the problem is downstream of the filter.
