i have a 2000 ford explorer with the abs light on
the brakes work fine..the light is driving me nuts
i checked the brake fluid..the fuses..and disconnected the battery..hoping to clear the codes...nothing worked.....
could someone please help me out with what to do to get the light off..
how do i pull the codes?
thank you
Run by Autozone or other parts store and they will check the codes for free. They can also reset the code and give you an idea what the problem is. If it continues to come back on then you have a problem in the system somewhere.
Running by Autozone is a waste of time with an ABS light. I work there and we have no capibility to read ABS codes. We are also not allowed to reset any service lights by company policy.
I don't know if my 92 applies to your 2000, but my exp brake lights came on (along with my abs light) when the plug was disconnected for a short time on the abs valve. Perhaps your problem is associated with your abs valve. My application has the valve on the inboard side of the frame under the drivers seat. The vehicle has a speed sensor mounted on the rear differential. (If you have 4 wheel abs, each wheel should have a sensor.) The sensor feeds a control module under the dash, which in turn controls the valve. The valve controls the fluid to the brakes...in my case the rear brakes only. Not much troubleshooting help in the Haynes or Chilton manuals, The most likely suspect would probably be the valve. And yes...trouble codes won't help you here!!!
Good luck
I replaced the rear speed sensor and the light is now off. Thanks to all for your help. This part was only $20 from the dealership, sure beats the price of them wanting $49.95 to hook it to a scanner to find out what the problem is and then god only knows how much more they would of gharged to fix it.
Rear Wheel Speed Sensor..If you have the first generation abs.
The newer abs systems have a wheel sensor on each wheel. The Haynes manual has a brief description of both of these, but not much in the way of troubleshooting.
