My 1992 F150 rear ABS brakes do not work. The ABS light is not on but when I stop hard the rear brakes lock-up. Once I release the break pedal the brakes release. I am not sure how to diagnose either the ABS module, ABS valve body, or the speed sensor. Can someone provide me with some direction?
Its broke. Add adjustable proportion valve and be done.
There is the abs proportioning valve under the truck on frame by front fuel filter I think. Its not abs like a car (unless you have front abs also which is rare) if its bad and not working, I'd just leave it alone and not bother fixing it. To keep the rear from locking up I'd add adjustable proportion valve.
Not really the answer I was looking for since I like to fix things back to their original working order. I guess if you are not bothered by quick fixes, you are good to go. Me, I like to do thing right. Even if it takes longer and costs a bit more.
Anyone out there with a better answer than UNTAMND's advice.
The valve is bad.... Go spend the 400$ or whatever from ford to get a new one (if they have them still) if you want to do it right. Or find a used one if you want to try using used parts to fix your braking system, or do what I said and put a new proportion valve in to keep your brakes from locking up, which is just as safe as getting a new abs unit.
Ford is the only truck with an 80s to late 90s truck with abs... Not having abs doesn't make it unsafe. Its only unsafe when you are driving it (like you are now) and the rear brakes lock up. I do not appreciate the insinuation that I was suggesting to halfass the braking system of your truck and put the lives of people around you at risk.
UNTAMND — no insinuation, I just like my vehicles to run like they were meant to. I am sure no one on this site wants to put anyone in danger. I apologize if I made you feel any animosity toward me. But, your second posting is much more helpful. Thank you.
rla2005 — Thank you for your suggestion about where to find reasonably priced RABS modules. Now that UNTAMND clarified his response, I have a reasonable place to start.
Perhaps you need to read up on how to properly use the Rear ABS. Once I read how to use them in the manual (and tried them out on ice), it made sense.
With Rear ABS only, you still need to pump the brake pedal (though not as rapidly as if you had no ABS at all). Why? Because your front wheels will still lock up and you'll lose steering. The difference is that when you have RABS only and the front wheels lock up, the front end will drift to the side, but the rear end of the truck will stay behind you. If you have no ABS at all, all four wheels lock up, and the rear end will come around.
Your RABS may not be broken, you may just not be using it properly and may have mistook the front wheels locking up for the rears locking up.
This is all in the user manual if you have or can find a copy.
Thank you very much jroehl. I did not know this and I do indeed have the manual. I will check it out. Very interesting. But, on dry pavement, the rear wheels are locking and the front keep turning and I still have steering. I'll give the manual a read and see if you are indeed correct in that I am using and interpreting the use of Rear ABS incorrectly. Thanks again.
