I have a 1989 E350 4x4 ambulance with a 7.3 and an E40D Tranny. Today out of the blue I lost all forward gears but reverse is still good to go. Dropped the pan and apparently the tranny is a recently rebuilt Jasper Reman. It looked like it just came off the bench. Spotless with only a minimum of metal shavings on the magnet. Replaced the filter and refilled the tranny. We got about 7qts in it and the dipstick says full. I don't have a manual yet but I know the 2000's hold like 17 qts. Is there that much in the cooler and torque convertor or is the 89 tranny capable of holding less ATF? Anyway she still won't go forward but drops into reverse flawlessly. Any ideas?
Sounds like your tranny computer went nuts. The E4OD is computer controlled and that was its major weakness. Being that it is a Jasper reman, it should have some sort of warranty on it as well. Was the torque converter replaced as well??
The Jasper was in there when I bought the truck so I don't know about the torque converter. Is it possible that it could work in reverse and not in forward?
A couple of days ago, while running at 70 mph on the freeway,my tranny self destructed. It was running real smooth then all of a sudden nothing,no forward, no reverse, when I put it in park there was a grinding sound. Ididn't have to put in neutral to roll it onto the tow truck. This is the 2nd tranny I've put in this truck. Any ideas on what is happening. The first rebuild only lasted 11 months, this one lasted 2 years.
this is exactly what my buddie's tranny is doing. no forward gears and reverse works fine! pulled the an, found a few loose bolts but not much metal shavings or burnt clutches. about 3 months on a rebuild. doews anyone have any idea!! the tranny fluid smelled burnt a little, but i have seen worse
ok then!! that solves it. i will just go rent a u-hall van and take the c-6 out of it and put my e4od back in it and tell them to come pick their piece of junk up!
i believe you. and thanks for the input. i will print it out and look to see if i can see anything obvious or about that. i don't like e4od's to begin with though.if i can't fix it real easy, i will just get a c-6 since i got the 3.55 ratio.
