03 F150 2WD-I dropped tranny pan, changed filter, reassembled, put in 4 qts fluid. Checked dipstick, seemed to be overfilled, despite instructios to add 5 qts. Started truck, put it in reverse, wnt about 4 ffet and then tranny wouldn't engage-ran it through all gears, just acts like in park or neutral. Over or Under filled???
No it's not from over or underfill.
You did something else unknowingly.
Is the filter mounted correctly so it does not draw air above the fluid level?
Is the connector plugged in solid to the DTR?
Is the OD switch lamp flashing?
Does reverse work?
All you needed to do was stand still and run all the gears without moving the truck.
You can't tell the correct level until the fluid is fully warmed to operating temperature because it expands.
If you put to much in cold to the top line it will be overfull when hot.
Understand the PCM has to operate the main pressure solenoid in the transmission when signaled to do so by the position change of the DTR so the PCM knows what to do with the transmission.
Good luck.
Thanks for the comment-yes, I was sure to see that old o-ring came off and new one was on. Update: Got a bottle of Lucas and now truck slowly coming around-almost normal but not quite-gets better each time I drive it-maybe there was air?
I suggest using a big plastic tub, like used for mixing concrete with a shovel, as the catch-pan on trans fluid changes. Then you can measure out what you took OUT. That can be a reference point then if you have any doubts.
Not running it, and then just checking the dipstick doesn't give you the right level. IF you had drained the Torque Converter too, and had tried to pour in a total fill, there is a good chance it would have just poured out of the case vent before you would have got all of it in. Need to run the engine for 30 seconds or so so the trans oil pump can pump ATF through the converter and back into everywhere it goes that is above the pan level.
If I were you I would just run it at an idle for 20 mins or so, then with foot on brake, shift P-R-N-D leaving it in each position for 5 secs or so, then back to Park and then check trans level on a level surface with it running. You may be underfilled. If you are driving it around with insufficient ATF, you may be slipping clutches and bands that are supposed to be applied tight - not good for trans life.
