On all gas engines i have rebuilt the oil pick-up sits just about an inch off the bottom of the pan. Does anyone know if the 6.9 is the same way? My 6.9 is using quite a bit of oil and i want to make sure that if it goes down a couple quarts it won't cause any damage. It is not being worked just is my daily driver. The intake has oil in it and the CDR hasn't been cleaned since it was new(1986),that is my next step to see if i can solve some of the consumption .
the cdr valve is the way the engine recycles the crankcase gasses. You are probably seeing the oil being dropped out of those gasses and into the intake system. Pretty much a normal happening unless there is lots of it. Also might want to keep an eye on the exhaust for oil burning. Valve guides wear out and that is where the oil is getting into the cylinders. How many miles on it ? Any problems with it ?

Good mainatainance program ?
I cannot be exact for the 6.9 oil pump pickup but the 7.3 screen is about 1-1 1/2" directly above the drain bolt in the pan. Next oil change check it with a mechanics/small ruler.
