tranny problems! HELP!!!

I am having some problems with my e40d. I have a 93 bronco with a 351. I takes more time than it should(close to 5 seconds) to shift into drive or reverse. it is worse when shifting into reverse. Also, just recently, it feels as if the torqu-converter is catching when it shouldn't. If I am at a complete stand still, the engine speed will drop to about 500 rpms, and then the whole car will jerk forward when the engine speed returns to normal. In reverse, the engine will often die when slowing down. I am going to do a fluid and filter change and see if that helps.

tranny problems! HELP!!!

I seem to be having the same problem with my E40D. Only some times it even kills the engine. I was curious if you ever tracked the problem down and what the solution was. Also, I noticed that since this started happening, my speedometer needle jumps. Any Idea how to fix this? e-mail aazz999(No Email Addresses In Posts!)

tranny problems! HELP!!!

It sounds like you may have bad seals in your forward clutch piston, do you have the same problem in reverse? If you have the same problem in all gears, it may be a pressure problem, it takes alot of pressure to engage the clutch packs firmly, if your pressure is low i would take a look at the fluid pump. As for stalling out at a stop, the torque converter should have a 3rd gear lockup, which prevents any slippage in direct drive (1 to 1 ratio 3rd gear) The lockup may be sticking and preventing the engine from idling without connection to the transmission. You must remember there is no mechanical link between the engine and transmission, inside the torque converter, the turbine and impellar create the rotary flow of fluid that drives the stator, which is linked to the pump in the transmission. This is what allows the engine to idle with the tranny in drive without extreme forward movement. With the stator locked to the convertor, this slippage wont be allowed. I would start by having the converter rebuilt or replaced, having it rebuilt is fast and costs about $50. See what happens from there. Let me know how it works out.
