How many quarts do i need to change tranny fluid in '97 f150 5.4l with E40D. The book says it takes 15qts but since the torque converter holds some fluid how much will it take to fill back up?
Thanks,
John
Does the e40d have a drain plug in the torque converter?
If it does I would drain the converter to, since it can hold several quarts of fluid -
I just changed the fluid in my 4r70w trans - capacity is 13.7 quarts I think, and I was able to drain almost 12 quarts between the torque converter and the pan - anyway my point is you want to get as much of the fluid as possible changed.
I would definetly drain the torque converter if it is at all possible.
Be careful when refilling as not all of the fluid will "fit" back in without running the engine if you drain the converter. You will need to refill the transmission in steps to allow the pump to refill the converter.
There are some good tips in the tech articles section of this website about changing tranny fluid.
I've never heard that you can drain from the converter while it's installed. I'll have to check when I get under it. The book doesn't say anything about it. I guess you have an inspection plate that allows you to get in there for the drain plug on the converter?
My 97 5.4 has an E4OD and definitely has a drain plug. I think I bought 14 or 15 qts when I last changed my tranny fluid. Make sure you use Mercon and not Mercon V. I would also add a drain plug to the pan while it is off. Sure makes the job easier next time.
