EGR Disconnect Instructions
I now have had my EGR disconnected for about 10K miles. I originally disconnected it during a cross country trip, pulling a steep hill the motor started bucking and losing power. Pulled over, truned off the motor waited for about two minutes then hit the road/steep hill again. There was some initial bucking but much less, then it went away, and has never returned. In my case an early 03 with no throttle plate, I have lost about 1/2 mpg overall, and I do have a cel light on. I had about 15K on the second EGR valve. Not sure if I am going to reinstall a new valve or not, but to un plug is always an option.
i have a 2004 currently have the thorttle plate out and the egr unpluged. i have orderd the block plate from elite should be here this week. my question when i put the plate in the up pipe do i hook the egr vavle back up? thought about hooking it back up to keep from throwing codes.. figured it probably wouldnt matter but wasnt sure if it opened with no pressure goin through it if that would cause it to run "lean"? thanks for the help
04 should not throw a code for egr unplugged unless you have a cali model.. either way you can get your sct to disable the egr function anyway.
once you have the block off plate in the uppipe, you can plug your egr back in if you are indeed having a CEL from it, but it won't really hurt anything..
the worst case scenario i can think of would be maybe if you had a leaky egr cooler then possibly the boost pressure could get into your coolant system and cause the truck to puke, but that's really reaching
no you wont run "lean" if your egr valve opens, you will simply have boost pressure going into the cooler instead of exhaust gas, but either way it won't go anywhere since the blockoff plate will be installed.. no harm done

i havent goten a check engine light maybe there is no code then? i have had it unpluged for about 3 weeks just bought the truck i guess il just leave it unhooked dont really want antifreeze in the intake if the cooler would fail, i think one should not unhook the egr without the plate thats why i am installing the block plate. seems like with the egr unhooked and closed there would be alot of pressure and hot exhaust in there with no were to go?? seems like that would cause cooler failing am i right??
Purpose of the egr is to allow exhaust gasses into air intake (cylinder) to take up "x" amount of volume thus not allowing a full complete clean air charge into the cylinder. The main function is to reduce cylinder temperatures (think tin can half filled with nitrogen, half filled with air/fuel mixture, explosive force down as well as temps.) thus reducing NOx even further in diesel exhaust.
it also reduces cylinder temps because (even though the exhaust gas is hot, that's the purpose of the egr cooler) the theory is to inject an inert gas (such as exhaust w/no O2 to burn) at a cooler temperature, thus pulling heat out of the combustion...
but from a performance standpoint egr is just plain a bad idea

it doesnt mean the truck was bought in cali, it just means that it's a "50 state legal" truck is all... the "50 state" trucks are called cali trucks, because the "49 state" trucks are legal everywhere else for sale as far as emissions is concerned.
hey man have you been to our local site.. :
www.southernnevadapowerstrokes.org ?? good guys here, we are having a meet this saturday in logandale..
although i'll probably be at the dyno if my parts get here this week.
wink wink matt... hint hint....

Should the disconection of the EGR help with the boilover problem? I noticed some coolant dripping off the bell housing ( after shut down) hours after towing my fifth wheel. It appeared it was coming from the back of the right head. Ford wanted me to turn them loose to find out where it was coming from. They estimated 4 hrs to test . Its like throwing money into a bottomles pit. I may be putting in my old 460 out of my old truck ,it was a trouble free motor for many years. Anybody know if they make an adapter for the 460 to a 6 spd tranny.

- No
- Blown head gasket or leaky EGR cooler
- Let them look if it's under warranty, do it yourself if it's not
- No, it's not
- Good for your 460!
- I doubt it, but good luck
I was a fan of the 6.0 until my warranty was up. Ford was great to replace injectors ,FICM and many other little problems. I could rebuild my 460 for half the price of a set of injectors not to mention the possible head problems. The price of deisel being more than gas is also an incentive. My built 460 had more bottom end tork and was able to make power up to 5,000 rpm. I wish I could find a specialist to make me an adaptor for the 460 as i really like my tranny and gear set up. I pull heavy loads and the F450 is the real truck for the job. I am afraid the expense of keeping up the 6.0 will be to great in the long run.
Gents, I joined this site last night and since then have been completely enveloped on the knowledge base that you have posted here. I bought my 03 F 350 last year and with the cost of everything going up now I figure it's time to return to my roots and do my own maintenance again. Not a certified diesel mechanic, but a stationary engineer and son of a Master Diesel Mechanic who used to be my forum with anything internal combustion. Now he's up above looking down and not available to have these discussions with me any longer. I hope to to be able to have some here with the members of this forum. Until then I will just have to be the student and learn from you all.
