Im looking for a limited slip for a 97 F-150, and have found them, but I need to know the axle splin. What I got off of the axle tag is 55 88 6F24. I know the 88 stands for 8.8 inch, but what about the other numbers. I called Ford and no one there knows what the splin is, shows how smart are dealship is. In addition to that code right above it is S8628.

The 55 prolly means 3.55... the 3 is often covered up by the bolt.
Chances are you have a 28 spline axel, I've only seen the 32 splines in mustangs but I could be wrong.
You can find Ford track loks on ebay for super cheap, especially in the 8.8 version as they are popular in mustangs, rangers, and F-150's. The OEM units are great for the weekend wheeler and hunter, and have very good longevity.
If you are a serious wheeler, then I would torwards a locker or such.
You should be able to pick one up for about $80 with shipping. I was lucky enough to find one for my rig as a complete 3rd member, I stripped the gears and such off and was able to break even on my Track lok unit off of ebay, I paid $60 for mine with shipping.
I would stay away from ones that look like they have any rust and gunk on them.

If i buy one with the wroung spline will it not work?
Unfortunately a 28 spline axel will not fit in a 31 spline LS unit, and vice versa.
I wish that I had the ability to tell you what spline axels you have, but I simply dont have that power, from my experince, all the trucks I've seen have had a 28 spline axel.
The only sure fire way I know of counting the splines would be to pull the axel out.
Go to http://www.drivetrainsuperstores.com/default.asp pick the year and modal you have and you will find the info you need. I put an eaton posi in my 2000 f150 about three months ago and it made a big improvement in traction. I hear very good things about ford traclocks. Eaton is very good but costs more. I went eaton because I think it is heaver duty. Take your time and shop around prices very a lot. You will need a dial indicator and a micrometer and shim kit also a way to press new carrier bearings on the new differential If you plan on doing the install your self. New carrier bearings are a must in my opinion. There is lots of info on the net on how to do the install. My truck is a 2000 f150 4wd 3.55 8.8 31 spline rear 28 spline front...
