8" or 9" ????

is there a simple way to tell the 8" and 9" third member without taking apart and measuring the ring gear. do they both share the same housing and can you iterchange the axle between the 2 as long as the splin is the same.

They do not share housings, and nothing interchanges except maybe some bolts.

If you can easily get a socket on the bottom two nuts holding it in the housing, probably an 8 inch, so they say.

Many ID features here:

Kevinstang's Ford Nine Inch Differential Page +

An 8 is considerably weaker than a 9, even though they look very similar.

One more time: They do not share housings. NOTHING interchanges. You can NOT put an 8" carrier in a 9" housing, nor can you put 8" parts in a 9" carrier. And you can not put 8" axles in a 9" housing.

Is this the Ranchero axle? I seem to recall Numberdummy advising you it's a 9, and can only be a 9 from that series of Rancheros---right?

Like the Beatles said: "Number nine, number nine, number nine....."

Ive read other places tha both 8 and 9 were available for the ranchero those years, not saying its right. I havnt found number dummy wrong before. He did say there could have been some swaping of the 2, but he must have meant the whole housing and all. Just asking to make sure all is right. Ive got it know 9".

The 8" was never used in F100's or F150's. Very few of the internal parts interchange between the 8 and 9 inch.

The 8" was introduced in 1962 and used in cars only thru 1980.

1963/64 Ranchero's with 260's / 1965/68 Ranchero's with 289's / 1968/69 Ranchero's with 302's used the 8 inch.

I could not find a listing in the 1965/72 & 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalogs for Ranchero's after 1969 with an 8 inch.

Some 8" applications:

1962 Fairlane/Meteors with 221/260 V8's.

1963/72 Fairlane/Torino/Montego/Falcon/Mustang/Maverick/Comet w/260/289/302's.

1973/74: Torino/Montego / No axle shafts are listed for Ranchero's or Torino/Montego station wagons for these two years, or for 1970/72's.

1973/79: Mustang/Cougar/Maverick/Comet / 1975/80 Granada/Monarch w/200/250 I-6's, 302's and some 351W's.

What that means is that you can swap the whole axle -- exchange an 8" with a 9", or vice versa.

9" external dimension

okay, get a divider. Measure across the carrier from center of one install bolt to the other-the ones that are farthest apart horizontally. I get 9 7/8" on my 9" carrier. I can't find my 8" carrier right away, but it is smaller. 8" rears are fine for small block engines they came with, pretty long life. All ford rears come in various widths between the spring pads and between the brake flanges. Wide F150 widths can be had at a junkyard as low as $15, narrow widths like 50's cars and 60's fairlanes go for about $400 used. The price is established by the shop in northern indiana, they will make any width you want for about $400. The narrow width ones are prized by street rod builders and drag racers, and are mostly bought up already.
