well 6 years ago i bought a 76 f100 short box it has a 66 390 , np435 trans it had a in out transfer now it has 205 hi lo transfer i think it was a bunch of pickups that made one pu. WELL here is the question the rear was leeking oil so i went to chang the brg and seal it had 28 splin axels or well on the pass side it was 28 the driver side was 31 spline and the brgs wher diff so how do i know witch is the right one the third member had 28splin sidegear on one sid and 31 on the other wow now im allmost afraid to drive it. so witch axle is the right axle for the houseing ?
It's all interchangeable... I would find another 31 spline and some spider gears... or if it's easier for ya to snag the entire 31 spline drop-out with a matching gear ratio.
I may have some 31 spline spider/ side gears if you're in a bind. I also have 31 spline axles, but shipping would be a pain unless you're in Colorado.
As for axle bearings there are two types... sealed and the "Set-20"
thnx for the info. Next question witch brg is better the sealed ball or the timkin roller with the seperat seal ? will get parts friday have spare third member out of 70? some thing lincon it has 2x43 gears and 31 spline axles. Will swap to the 3.50 i think they will fit on the carrer. will let u know have a great turky day.

Depends on which axle you get, the bearings are not interchangeable
thanx for the info i found a 31 spline axle 50$ will put gears on the lincoln rear it was a 4 pin clutched posi.
If the 9" rear axle (3rd member aka pumpkin) is from a Lincoln...what year is the Lincoln it came from?
1966/73: Some FoMoCo Passenger Car 9's (and as an option on 1968/72 F100's) have 31 spline axle shafts, 4 pinion Traction-Lok (Posi is a GM term) and...a 9 3/8" ring gear.
ONLY 5 parts are the same as a 9 inch: One pinion bearing and pinion bearing race, pilot bearing retainer, housing gasket and pinion seal.
well i know what a 9-3/8 is and it is not one of thouse it has 3 pins one long one and 2 short ones 4 spiders and 2 side gears 31 spline they fit the axels i have the lincon is long gone i kept the (pumpkin) because it was free the lincon was really big it had a 460 and c6 dont rember the exact year thoug. the pinion suport is a littel different the iner brg is bigger than the one out of the truck. thnx for the info thoug.
You can interchange the axles as long as you use the same bearing as what came off that axle shaft originally. The large bearings, 3.15" o.d., have two different i.d.'s, so it will not allow you to put a tapered wheel bearing on an axle that came with a sealed bearing, and vice versa.
thnx, The wheel brg problem has been fixed i have two axels with the tapered brgs. now im working on the (pumpkin) i have one out of a lincon car that is a clutched 4 spider geared posi and am trying to install my 3.50 gears on to it . what i came acrost is that the car 9" has a bigger brg on the pinnion . i think i will just bolt my ring gear on the posi unit and install in my pumpkin and use my pinnionsuport.

1957/79 Passenger Car and 1957/86 F100/150 9's use the same pinion bearings...except if the 9" rear axle has a 9 3/8" ring gear.
These bearings (and races) have BIN's (Bearing Industry Numbers) stamped on them. BIN's are what autoparts stores, bearing shops go by.
If one of the pinion bearings is stamped HM-89444 .. you have a 9" 3rd member with a 9 3/8" ring gear.
ok the pumpkin that came from the lincon looks the same as the pu one. Same ribbs on the case no bent ones, all strate . the 9-3/8 ring gear has a bent rib on the top of the case. ive seen one. ther is a number on the suport it is ( D20W-C ) does this mean 82 because the lincon was not an 82 . well my gear bolted right on the posi unit, left brgs on the carer they fit in pu case got good centerd pattern on the tooth with .008 back lash. it is going in right now. thx for all of your help. next edel carb tune n
