I recently removed my starter on my 58 while cleaning up the engine. My problem is that when I removed the starter, the starter drive slid down on the shaft, and now I cant seem to get it back in place.I have the wiring removed,as I'm relocating everything to the firewall.I tried hooking up the batterycharger to it,thinking that by putting juice through it,it might return it it's disengaged position, but it remained engaged.I don't have any experience with these types of starters, that slide down a spiral shaft.Could it be that it won't work properly without the proper voltage?I had the charger on boost when I put current to it,but it didn't seem to make a difference. It worked fine before I took it out. It's got me stumped.lol.
Not exactly sure what kind of starter you have but I do know that some types automaticly spiral into the flywheel when the power is applied. Have you tried installing the starter to see if it will engage?
Hi Michelle. .It's the first starter of this type I have dealt with.Yes ,it does spirial into the flywheel.I reinstalled it and hooked up the batterycharger to it to see if it would disengage when I connected current to it,but it remains engaged.I hope this helps.Thanks.
if it slid down the shaft chances are the roll pin on the top has fallen out. To put the pin in you need to push down on the large washer on the drive. I have used a strut compressor to to this. The pin holds the drive in place on the shaft and the washer prevents the pin from falling out.
Hi A187. .If the pin is my problem,I now have another problem.lol.I don't recall a pin falling out of it when I took it off the engine. It was a couple of months ago that I took it off,but if I remember right,we compressed the spring with some vice grips, but it still wouldn't rotate back down on the shaft. It is on the engine right now,so tomorrow night I'll take it back off and look for the pin you mentioned.Thanks.
I don't think the pin fell out. The bendix drive will spiral down to engage, and then when you turn it, it will click around. The only to disengage it is to spin the starter gear over 600 rpm, such as what happens when the engine starts. Just put it back in, making sure it lines up with the ring gear and you should be good to go....
