Hello,
My starter whent out on my truck. It's 2000 F-150 5.4L 2WD. I replaced it, and when I turned the truck on, the starter was still going. I shut it of and removed the key, but the starter was still trying to start the car,.. so I removed the clamp off the battery. Checked the starter relay switch,.. replaced i twith the new on and it was doing the same thing. Removed the starter and I had the experts tested,.. and it passed. Put the starter back on,.. turned the truck on, truck was running and so it was the starter. But this time the it shut's off when I turn the key off. So My problem is that I don't know why the starter wont desengage when the engine starts up. The key does go back when I let it go.
I have replaced so many starters on many diferent cars,.. but never had any problems like this one!
Please HELP
Thanks
DJPaul
shot in the dark here but-- have you inspected the fly wheel/ flex plate? if the old starter was bad it could have chewed up the flex plate. My 2000 had a worn flexplate and the starter would hang up. had it replaced and no more problems. there is a round inspection hole in the bell housing on the transmission, just pop off the cover and have a tiny peek.
I fixed it! Looks like the starter relay switch sometimes get stuck. Not all the time. So I had to replace it just in case this doesen't happen again. The starter relay swithc I got at kregan didn't work,.. it did the same thing, so I took the advice that said at the original part "For replacment use FORD original factory part. Other brand's might burn other parts on your truck". something like that it said on the part but in that meaning. So I am stoked now,...
