starter issue

i have a 95 f150 4.9 4x4. i have done sme research on here and found some ideas but no luck. long story short i put in a used motor because the old one was shot. i finaly got everythang back togeather and ready to start. the problem is when i turn the key all the starter dose is throw the shaft out, it dosnt spin over. the relay on the firewall sounds like its working properly. its a brand new starter and all the connection are tight nothing is corroted the battery termanels are clean and tight. i took the new starter back to the store and had it tested. it worked fine there. i did notice that the negitvie cable insulaton is soft and loose half of its length. but i wouldnt thank it would cause my issue?

It could be your ground cable. BUT, make sure you can spin the motor over by hand. You should have jammed the torque converter in the transmission, and that could cause the same problem.

If you can spin your motor over, then I would try a new cable.

On the right track

yeah buy a new negative cable. I had a bad ground cable and it was an intermittent nightmare. It was a game of luck getting it to start, it would be fine for two weeks, then wouldn't start for two days, and then would start again. And I replaced a few other things first trying to fix the problem because my negative cable looked "fine" kinda like yours but it was shot. Replaced it last winter and it absolutely fixed it, then again I also had a new starter and fender mounted starter solenoid.

It is not weird at all. I used to be a splicer for the telco. Once that copper was exposed to salt and water, it doesn't take much to corrode those thin wires.

Once you moved the wire (disconnected your starter / etc), the wires that were exposed to water (probably the internal strands since that braided wire will hold moisture inside) broke, and now the ground wire cannot supply enough current.

I chased my starter problem for almost 6 months before i fixed it and it was terrible. I never knew which days it was going to start and which it wasn't, but that's what worked for me

I hope you fixed your problem for good but I have a feeling it might come back to haunt you. If it does replace your cables. Good luck!! and I have a 93 and there is no negative cable on the starter, it is grounded through the bolts that secure the starter motor.

Unless our starter motors are completley different there are two wires going to the starter, a thick one and a skinny one. The thick one is power directly to the motor and the thin one is power to the starter motor mounted solenoid. If yours is the same as mine like i think it is I have no clue how its working for you

I think; what some think is the negative on the solenoid is actually the wire that completes the circuit when the solenoid is engaged causing the starter to turn the engine. :U)

That's new to me. I know the solenoid signal wire your talking about but my truck only has two available terminals. Guess they are different after all. Learn something new everyday

I am talking about the starter side post not the "S" wire...the solenoid is grounded to the frame, when the "S"start wire energizes the solenoid winding inside; it causes a metal plate to join the two posts making it a complete circuit causing the starter to turn...so the second post (that is sometimes confused as a ground) is just a post for the starter side wire of the circuit. :u) http://www.maliburacing.com/images/starter_solenoid.gif
