I'm buying the Edge Evolution for two reasons; first, it gives a code number and verbose explanation when using it as a code reader; and second, the Superchip requires that you enter your VIN into it which it then stores. Not a problem if you never want to sell it, but if you do, as I understand it, the performance part of it will not work with another truck unless Superchip's re-programs it. I believe this costs $125.00 plus shipping to and from them.

I hate to tell you this but you're misinformed. The Superchips Microtuner does not require you to enter a VIN number. The Microtuner and Evolution do the exact same thing: when you program your vehicle it locks to that vehicle. When you restore the vehicle to stock tuning, they unlock from the vehicle.

If diagnostics is what you're after... look at the Predator. It has full text diagnostics plus something the Evolution doesn't have: live sensor data logging that you can download onto your PC. Plus the ability to update the programmer with a web download.

Ditto what the webmaster said. I haven't heard any complaints about the Predator tuner. The diagnostics function is a real plus as well.

Thanks for setting me straight. I considered the Predator, but, and again I may be mistaken, it won't work with a 1996.

Sorry, I didn't realize you had a 1996. I think you're right, they won't work with the 1996. Have you checked out the Diablo chips?

For future reference, if you create a signature with your truck it's easier for people to give you suggestions.

I should have been more "truck specific." I have a 1996 PSD which would use the 1705 model. On page one of the manual ( a .pdf file on the Superchips website) it states, under "Connecting the Max Microtuner to your vehicle, "...MicroTuner is VIN locked....This indicates the MAX Micro Tuner has been previously used to tune a vehicle and cannot be used to tune another." On page 7 of the manual, it states that after programming is complete, "Once the programming sequence has been successfully installed on a vehicle, the MAX Micro Tuner becomes locked to that vehicle. The MAX Micro Tuner may not be used to tune any other vehicle."

PickSty, the VIN lock simply means that you can't use it on more than one vehicle at a time. You can use the tuner on another vehicle, but not at the same time.

It appears you're confused as to exactly what's going on. They're all truck specific while the truck is tuned. Diablo, Edge, Superchips and Hypertech -- all of them. But as soon as you restore the truck to stock tuning they unlock and can be used on another truck.

Yes, I'm slow but I eventually get there. I went back and re-read the manual and I see what you mean. Oh well, maybe all this will keep someone else from having the same misunderstanding. Thanks again for your help.
