Hello everyone! I am considering a used vehicle purchase, and was told by the owner that the truck has the 3rd row seat. Everywhere I look says the seat wasn't available on the XLS. The truck is a former fleet vehicle, however, and I believe the fleet buyers are able to order things that normal buyers can't. Has anyone seen a 2002 Explorer XLS with the 3rd row seat? The truck is in a different state, so I haven't seen it yet. Thanks in advance! Great web site!
Have the seller e-mail/fax you a copy of the window sticker, or at least the VIN. Also, have him take a picture with the seat up and send it to you. I think, like you said, the 3rd-row seat was only available on XLT's and up.
How chummy are you with your local service department? Maybe they'd be willing to run the VIN for you. There are websites that can check prior history based on the VIN, but I don't know if they can list options. I'd still have the seller send me a pic before I drive out-of-state to check it out.
Not chummy at all...I do as much of my own work as possible. I will see if I can get photos from the seller. I will also call Ford Fleet sales tomorrow to see if they have some sort of order history via the VIN. Thanks for your help!
No prob - BTW, I just checked "Build Your Ford" and the 3rd seat isn't offered in the XLS (at least not for 2004). If you do confirm it's a 2002 XLS with the 3rd seat, let me know......might be a collector's item someday!!!
Okay, I spoke with the seller and he confirmed that the XLS does not have a third row seat. He is just under the impression that one can be added by the dealer. Of course, for the right price anything can be added! But that would involve replacing the second row seats also, so I don't think that it would be worth it. If we truly decide we need the third row, I will sell the XLS and find a nice XLT to buy. Thanks again for the help!
You're right, it would be very expensive - especially since the seat belt retractors for the 3rd seat are built into the rear pillars on either side of the liftgate.
