Question 460 vs 462 linc

What visual differences set the 460 and 462 apart? I am going to be looking for a Lincoln donor motor for a project build up here soon and there is a junk yard just up the road with about 20 or so 60's/70's lincolns. There was a few years in the late 60's when lincoln used both the 460 and 462 motor. Does anyone have a 462 or know them well and would let me ask them some questions? I would greatly appreciate it..

Try this...

By far the easiest way is to look for the flattened pent roof type valve covers with 7 bolts. This will be a lima 385 BBF. The 462 is an MEL series engine and has rounded valve covers kind of like an FE 352.

The carbs are different too. BBF lima uses the motorcraft 4300 like the 4v cleveland does.

Hope this helps some...

Can not help there Scott but...

It has been years since I have worked with one.

I believe that the intake manifold is retained in the same way as the old "Y" block 312's were. The intake has slots and then the manifold bolts have a retainer under the bolt then the manifold itself.

To me the MEL looks like a nail head buick does just wider...

Hope this helps some...

Mad Porter,

Nail head buick? WOW! Now you've dated yourself. Havn't heard that term in a few years.

A 462 is a HUGE engine. The valve covers will almost touch the fenderwells on both sides. A 460 is large, but not that large.

I'd go with the 460, unless you're really into retro. There is zilch available for the 462, while the 460 is heavily supported by aftermarket suppliers.

As far as HP/torque figures, they are close - but the 460 has far more possibilities. BTW, 460 blocks have the old 462 tranny bolt pattern cast into them.

the old 430 which is the same as the 462 used an fe bell and flywheel.unless they changed them you would have no trouble getting a tranny for it.the fuel pump was up front in the middle.

I planned on using the 460 actually...just wanted some obvious visual differences to make my search quick and easy. Does anyone have a 462 or know them well enough to know how many bolts hold the valve covers down?

They changed the 462 bellhousing patterns more than once during the 60s. There was a thread in the Y block forum about it recently, with pics. The late 462s used half of the 429/460 pattern, but sloped off sharply on one side rather than the basic squared off 460 pattern. I've seen that pattern in 429/460 blocks all my life, not knowing what it was. Therefore, the 385 block will bolt up to the late 462 tranny.

The 462 was only produced for 2 yrs, I thought 66-67? Also, I have done some research...I have found that the 430/462 lincs have only 3 bolts across the intake side of the valve cover- where the 460 has 4. Anyone verify for me? Thanks!

460 valve cover bolts

The 460 has 3 bolts across the part of the valve cover near the intake and 4 botls across the part next to exhaust manifold

You are correct my mistake- I was trying to be a smart a$$ without walkin out and lookin haha. Thanks for the correction! So the question still remains......does anyone know how many valve cover bolts are on a 462 lincoln engine?
Scott
PS- I know that the 460's intake side has 3 bolts, and the outer 2 bolts aren't exactly on the corner, where it appears to me in a photo that the outer v-cover bolts on the 462 are pretty much right on the corner.....any verification on this one lol? also, the 462 doesn't seem to have an oil fill on the valve cover like the 460...is this true? sorry for being so difficult guys- I really appreciate your help!
