I'm looking at what I'm told is a 1968 ford 460. But after some resurch I found that in 68 the 462 and 460 were put in Lincoln continentals. Now I want a 460, not a 462. So is there any definit signs to look for to identify the diffrence?
there are a couple of visual clues that might help
the 462 looks a lot like the FE engine. the valve covers have a more round top appearance like the FE's. the 460's valve covers have the flat top.
the 462 intakes have a pronounced separation of the intake runners where they mate to the heads while the 460's are filled in between the runners. (at least most pics of 462's i have seen have been this way). most 462's i have seen have an oil fill tube off the front of the engine like the old chev's and y-blocks had. the 460's don't.
if you can remove a valve cover that would be the best option. the 462 valves are all inline while the 460's are canted, that is the intakes and exhaust valves are in different locations from each other.
also look between the center exhaust ports for the head casting number. the 68 460 will be C8VE.
once you start looking at them, they are quite visually different engines. do some searching on the internet for pics of each and then you will be able to spot the differnences right away.
As per previous post, just adding a couple of things:
Regarding the intake, it is "open runner" design, and will have a tin cover under it to cover the lifters.
Regarding the valves, in line and on rocker shafts like the FE, while the 460 uses individual rockers and valves are canted. Might be able to see the rocker shaft if there is a removable breather or oil cap in the valve cover.
