old87, Thnx for the big hoorah! This yankee is WELL aware of the major difference in the South's view of military service and that of the pseudo-elitists up here. My Marine summed it up well on the phone last night. He said; "I like the South!" I enjoyed my time at MCAS Cherry Point, NC and MCB Quantico, Va. back in the late '60's. When the eldest was stationed in Fl, Va and TX, we got a lot of exposure to wonderfully hospitable people and it was and is appreciated. The eldest will be moving from NAS, Corpus Christi to the naval facility in Panama City, Florida in October. She is a NROTC grad from Cornell and paying us back for paying for her schooling. She did two trips to the Persian Gulf and as she finished the 2nd one, the tsunami hit. Her HM-53 was the 1st U.S. aircraft into the area and she spent almost 2 months there flying supplies and a little medivac. 3broncocrazy, There is a north-south road just west of Navarre that runs up to I-10. East River Smokehouse is about 1/2 mile up that road from Navarre and it is on the east side of the road. You will know you are close if you open your window and breath.
Danko you do have alot to be proud of. I wish your children all good luck while in the service and throughout there lives. They are doing what alot of young people wouldnt think of doing these days and that is very commendable.
Thnx! You heard about #1 and #4. #2 was one of 43 women that got into MCOCS Quantico and one of 23 that made it through. She thought she would get a scholarship but they offered less so she stayed in school and will become the first Dr. Danko next March. #3 tried for a NROTC scholarship and could not get it but just graduated from Villanova. #5 is finishing h.s. jr. year and her boat made the fianls last weekend in Ohio at the "nat'l's" They ended up #6 in the nation for women's 8. Annapolis is after her to row for them. So ........ it looks like all five have at least given a good look at military service and understand service is the big part of all this. They also know that Bush, Kerry and Cheney all have kids their age and none of them are serving. I will drive her to Cornell next week where she will attend college and have college credit before she graduates from h.s., just like her older sisters did. But what I am REALLY proud of is Momma!!!!!!!! Yes, My kids know that military service is to be honored and not looked upon with suspicion as so many up here do. The eldest has to stay in at least 9 years because of her flying and she is thinking about doing 20. She has over 6 in already. #4 was supposed to get avionics training in Pensacola but he flunked his first drug test. He and the Marine Corps are a perfect match and they have turned a pothead into a good jarhead. The Marine Corps gave me a major jolt too, many years ago.
Thnx! Just spent 3 days with our Lance Corporal. Momma and I took his pit bull to N.C. and spent 3 days touring the Coastal areas n.e. of Jacksonville. We started with the BBQ at the Starlight in Ayden and it was okay and nothing more. We then went to the Outer Banks and had a great time and some wonderful seafood. We worked our way back and spent a night near Atlantic Beach/Morehead City and enjoyed the moon reflecting on the ocean and had a few beers with the boy talking that father and son/old Marine with New Marine talk. The next a.m. we sat out there watching dolphins and ate some more good seafood and took him back to Marine Corps Air Station, New River, NC. Out in the parking lot, he was introducing everyone to his dog and parents (in that order) when I heard a familiar sound and turned around to see a 53 flying (what my eldest flies). Great weekend! Life is good! He "deploys" in February for "over there."
Jax and the outer banks offer alot. My fav is south of Jax around the St. John's River.
The food, views and people really make it for me.
Again congrats to you for raisin' such good kids..
Please let them know my heart is with them..
Got a report tonight that Jen-Rites, or JennWrights on the coast had excellant flounder this weekend and the service was exceptional.
Glad to bump a good 'un!!!!
