they prolly had it all worked out so that when the engine warmed up the valves were set perfect. german overengineering. gotta give em credit for having you work on a cold engine though.
Whatever the manufacturer says. They have figured out all of the different expansion rates and have settled on the most accurate method and specs for setting the valve clearance for that engine. If you don't follow the manufacturers procedure then it is a guessing game that can result in a burned valve or worse if you guess wrong.
VW's (my former passion), were alloy everything except the valves and rockers and seats and were of course air cooled. They called for .004-.006 cold and you could always get away on the loose side but if you got them tighter than .004 on the exhaust you would burn, especially #3 because it was the farthest from the fan. But I guess this isn't 335 talk is it? I agree though, do it the way the factory lays it out or your rollin the dice.
you sure it was a passion and not a disease - use to be a dubby down here with a s/block of unmentionable origin wedged in the *** that thing flew - had a vw in the workshop once for missing opened the lid and washed as the oil soaked engine caught fire from sparks from the dizzy, by the time i got the extinguisher and put it out all the wiring etc was fried - so i pushed over to the autosparky and let him fix it (only dubby i almost worked on) - Though my partner wants a combi now
