Looking from the front of block. Look at the timing housing, lower left corner (pass side). There is a small stamping near the bottom.

I believe the first # is the last digit of the year.

cool.thanks alout. now is there a way to find out what its out of and if its a 351m or a 400. I have another question, that is this moter was running on propane, thus the fuel pump was removed and plated over. i instald a eldelbrock intake ant quadrajet 4 barrel carb. will a 5 psi fuel pump work (i have on already), or do i need to purchas another one of greater psi. and if so how much bigger should i go. or should i just put a manual pump back in.

the reason i dont think this is a 351, is my book sais that the temprature sending unit is lokated in the head. on this engine it is lokated in the front of the engine just by the water pump.

If the origional valve cover sticker is gone there is no way to be sure whick one it is.
I would put the manual pump back on. The temp sending unit is located on the front right side by the pump on all 351c/m & 400's. Externaly there are no differences between 351m/400, some people claim the balancer is wider on a 400 but I've seen them both ways.

Check out these pages for more info about the 351M/400 block casting ID codes.

http://home.earthlink.net/~bubbaf250/parts/parts02.html

Post the codes you found (and the their locations on the block) in this thread. I'll tell you what I can about them.

The last year the 351M was used in LD trucks (Bronco/F150/F250LD) was 1981, so if it's a 351M, it could be originally from a 1981 Bronco.

The 5 psi electric pump should work fine with a carb. Maximum pressure for most carbs is about 7 psi, but that's too much if you ever run over a bump. If you want any rough road (or off-road) capability, you need to regulate the pressure to 2-3 psi to prevent carb flooding.

The number you posted looks like a calibration code (from a sticker on the valve cover). It does not conform to the Ford part number scheme. I don't have a way to look up calibration codes like that, but your local Ford dealer might be able to look it up.

To identify the engine, look on the right (passenger) side of the block, below the cylinder head, for a number cast into the surface of the block (as shown in the first picture in the "Engine block photo archive" link I posted).

Also look on the top of the block, behind the intake manifold, next to the oil pressure sending unit.

Post any codes/numbers you find in those locations.

Late production (1980-up) 351M/400 engine block. It could be a 351M originally from a 1981 Bronco.

If you want to know more, look for date codes in the locations described on the links I posted.

You need to identify the crankshaft to determine whether it's a 351M or a 400.
