Everything was going great with the 5.8L, the beast was plowing up a decent grade on the freeway when the engine just stopped. It was like somone pulled the plug. I was running a Crane ignition and coil, but pulled it out and replaced it with the stock coil when it got home. Replaced the cap and rotor, too. No luck; it'll crank but no start. There is no spark from the stock coil and I'm stumped. I remember from my earlier Bronco that there was a module that fed the distributor, something like a thin strip or?? Does the computer fry with any regularity? Any suggestions on parts that typically fry?
Thanks for any help.
BTW, it's been a while since I posted here. My last Bronco was the victim of a bad intersection and Ford Excursion. The two didn't mix well. At least this one already has the Mass Air setup, so I don't need to convert.
try the Ignition module they have always been the proublem with my EFI trucks either it is plugged direct to the Dist. or if it is a later model it will be on the fender just trace the wires of the Dist. auto zone can test them last one cast me around 50$ if i remeber correct
Well, I checked the ignition controller and it showed that the dwell was bad. I replaced the unit, but alas, it didn't solve the problem. It cranks no problem but doesn't start. Does the ECM reader work if the car isn't running? Any other ideas? Or is there a tow and shop in my future?
Problem identified! Pulled the distributor and found the shaft wobbling all over the place. Also found a chunk of broken rotor tip wedged in near the rotating part. Ugly inside, real ugly. Any recommendations on a new distributor for a TFI setup? Mallory, MSD, or?
unless your motor is built replace with a good stock unit from napa or ford. those others are nice and work well but a bit pricey for something that doesnt need all that juice. glad you found your issue.
