i was reading somewhere, soone proposed a 2wheel low. He said if you had manual hubs, couldn't you leave the hubs UNLOCKED and engage the transfer case into 4 low. So you would have the reduction of 4 low but not have the front engaged. Could you do this? what effects would this have on the truck?
I believe the reduction between 4 wheel LOW and 4 wheel HIGH, has to do with the front end only. If I understand it right, in 4 wheel LOW the fronts turn FASTER then the rear to get a better bite, but the rear ratio never changes.
I am not sure but I bet someone hear will know for sure.
when you put it in 4 wheel low it puts both the front and the rear into a lower gear ratio. you could use it like 4 wheel low like that but if you do it alot its going to have the same affect as using 4 wheel low as the front drive shaft and axles are still going to be turning. some mud draggers use a lower ratio in the front as to pull the truck more and help it float but this should never be done to any truck that will ever see asphalt. the np205 transfercase can be made to run 2 wheel low by adding a twin stick shifter to it. that way you can have all kinds of options of how your power it transfered to the wheels. hopes this explains it.
I know that if the front hubs were unlocked and the Tcase was in 4L it would only be 2L at the rear. I would like to know, as did kjg26, if this would cause any harm to the drivetrain or stuck. There are sometimes I think this could be useful.
well as long as the hubs arent engaged, your doing the same thing as using 4wd in the mud. it wont harm anything, it will just cause the same wear and tear as using 4wd anyother time.
I have done just that on several ocassions. It is nice with my 3.08 gears and the 5 speed to have the low reverse when backing up my trailer. Just don't lock the hubs. There won't be any more wear and tear on it than putting it in 4wd.
I do that to back up the trailer all the time (got a 5 sp.) nice to leave it in gear and not have to hold the clutch half way down. I also do it sometimes in traffic jams for the same reason, you can idle down the road without having to touch the gas or brake. the 4wd gear will just spin freely in the front with no load.
