My 91 explorer has developed a signficant leak from the power steering pump reservoir. I poked around last night and it looks like the leak is coming from the outlet that you can easily see. It looks like it has a nut holding a tube into the reservoir. Has anybody ever experienced this, what part did you need to replace it, and how difficult a job was it to do?
I assume you are talking about the hose that runs into the side of the power steering pump. Mine leaks too, I jut keep filling it up. Mine is pretty rusted and I have had bad luck in the past with breaking the lines off inside the pump and then I have to replace the pump. I bet you can grab the line and move it around a little, which is why it leaks. The solution is to replace the line, but like I said, you'll be lucky if you're not replacing the pump too...
but i've got a 91 ford explorer. I've had 2 problems w/the power steering unit leeking. the first time it leaked from the hose. I basically disconnected one end of the hose and cut off about an inche of the hose(including the section with the leak) then reatached it.
the second time the leak was from the lower pitman arm. I'm not sure if thats what your talking about but after i went out and bought a pitman arm puller and the seal the replace the old seal,,,,i tried putting in a fluid that i bought from wal-mart. it was in a beige bottle. about 3 bucks and it said it was the strongest or heaviest (whatever) power steering leek stopper. i only used about 1/3 the bottle and the leak stopped in about 1 day.
to the leak on the reserve on the 4.0L disconnect your line, inspect it should have a teflon washer on the end , I had the same problem because some idot used a o-ring.
