headers - '01 4.0L sport-trac VS. '97 ranger 4.0L

a guy i know has a (97?) ranger with 4.0L. he's selling the BBK headers & y-pipe that are on it now. i'm thinking they might fit my '01 4.0L sport trac, but the MAC headers i've seen are described as fitting up to a '98 (i think) explorer or ranger - which makes me think that BBK's would fit the same models. i'm wondering if ford either changed the heads so the exhaust ports are different, or changed the arrangement of the motor, exhaust & chassis so that they won't fit. on the other hand, maybe all of that is still the same and they will fit...

does anybody know?

now THAT is an explanation that makes sense! mine IS a SOHC, and his IS a pushrod motor...

so, i'm stuck with leaving it completely stock?

They are two different engines. I'm not sure if the heads are the same though. Your Sport Trac only came with a SOHC 4.0L. Your friends '97 Ranger 4.0L was the OHV engine. The reason the headers will fit both the Ranger and the Explorer is because the 4.0L OHV was offered on both. The SOHC became an option on the Explorer in '97 and became the standard engine in '01. The SOHC replaced the OHV on the Ranger in '01. The Sport-trac hasn't came with any other engine than the SOHC. I have yet to see a set of headers designed for the SOHC, only the OHV.

Not completely stock. You can get a performance chip, open-air intake and cat-back exhaust. I have all three on my '97 SOHC Sport and like all three.

reberhardt,

I've been thinkning about doing what you have done to my '97 Expl SOHC, how do you like your set-up and has it made a lot of difference (performance wise)? What do you think is the total amount that you spent on it?

Thanks, John

Everything works well together. The Superchip is what I felt the most, followed by my K&N FIPK with the least gain coming from my Borla cat-back exhaust. I've had the FIPK and Superchip in and out for various reasons over the last couple of years. I notice the power drop the most when I take the Superchip out. Once the outside temperature gets above 90F, I don't notice the FIPK quite as much. Once I put my Borla on two years ago, it hasn't been off since. When I did put it on, I can't say that I felt any gain but it does sound and look much better than stock though. Since I haven't had it on and off, I can't say for certain if there was a noticeable power gain or not. I already had my Superchip and FIPK installed when I put the Borla on so maybe they masked any power gains to be felt. I spent about:
$280 for the Borla
$180 for the K&N FIPK
$175 for the Superchip

Thank you very much for the input, reberhardt. That's a good start to help my thinking this out!
