Ok guys what is the real deal. I have read many things on exhaust for the 6.0. Some say if you get a bigger down pipe it actually hurts low end torque some say you need a bigger down pipe. Others say all you need is a cat back and still others say you can just replace the muffler with a high flow muffler because the rest of the exhaust is fine. What do I really need? I plan on getting the predator, I tow about 8000-9000 lbs and I want something with a nice sound ( I like to hear my turbo whistle) Oh I also get emmision tested where I live so I dont think I can just delete muffler/cat like some have done. Thanks again for your help I love this forum.

as far as i know(and i have my emmision inspection liscence) diesels are exempt from PA emmisions and i feel that all the stock exhaust needs is a 3.5" down pipe and the muffler removed
there isnt a whole lot of difference from 3.5 to 4" pipe, and the factory system doesnt have restrictive bends
OK bighoss so then as far as normal inspection goes I will be fine with just removing muffler and putting a straight pipe in? What about the cat, leave that in place also?
My two cents.... (wanted or not - ignore if you wish :-)
the stock downpipe is horrificly (sic) crushed... and no more than maybe 2 inches tall and 3 inches wide... and there is no way that has a man. bend --- it's like crush it any way you can to get it to fit !
The aftermarket turbo back system I got for $325 looked like the alaskan pipeline compared to it !
And fyi - I did the muffler delete with the cat and in my Ex it was too loud on long trips after an hour or so... around town it was FINE... but u couldn't hear the turbo... now with the stright thru muffler it's a turbo jet
jdadamsjr , so how big is your down pipe and you say muffler delete with the cat so you still have the cat its just down pipe to cat and then straight out the back. Im looking for somthing with a nice whitle from the turbo when like in parking lots and all you know not moving very fast but has some back bone when you punch it. mine is stock right now. plan on doing the exhaust and intake trying to get an idea since you seem to sound pleased with yours
so your say just cat back no muffler and a tip of course. dont touch the down pipe or anything like that? mine is stock and dont plan on putting any chips or engine mods other then intake and exhaust. i came from a 3.0 ranger so this is way fast enough for me.

the downpipe is a 3.5" that flares to a 4" from there to the back thru a 4" free flow muffler - had the local muffler shop that installed it
cut the cat out of the old system...
trim the front of the cat to a little bigger than 4" diameter so the pipe could slide in the front...
then the cat outlet was trimmed to just fit inside the 4" pipe to the back and all welded in...
immediatley noticed better performance... how much - didn't measure and can't quantify... just felt better - like 15 to 25 hp....
but the benifit I was after was
1) quieting down the straight pipe with CAT that needed some type muffler
2) lowering egt's - which it did
3) retaining the turbo whistle without it being too loud...
so you have a cat and a muffler i like the idea of keeping all those components in there and just tunning it kinda like you did. nicer sized pipes and all.. sounds nice thanks for the info
I asked this in a post in the past and got no response. But go to the 6.0 Bilble. There is an EBP sensor (exhaust back pressure). If there is no back pressure, the vgt valve will close the vanes to create higher speed on the turbo. If you increase the diameter of the exhaust, you lose some back pressure. Won't the loss of back pressure cause the turbo vanes to stay closed too long resulting in turbo overspeeds? Is this the cause of the louder turbo noise? Is there a down side to a big exhaust?

exempt is exempt
take it out if ya want, but if ur lookin for sound, just punch it out....mine sounds better punched out than the ones w/ a full 4" straight pipe, IMO
As I searched through websites for exhaust, chip/programers, gauges--I saw one of Motorhaven's competitors that had done dyno tests with 3.5 and 4" downpipes and the 3.5 was actually the better of the two. I don't remember which site it was but that's one of the early tests I read. Maybe you have a very valid point SBV?
