Commodore 64 baby! I've got one of those, and a Commodore 128 up in the attic to play with. For everyday stuff, I've got an ancient (by computer standards) Compaq.
Now there's a deal breaker right there.
There are many compatible mice available.
I personally love the optical mouse...no multiple buttons and wheels for me.
I'm talking about those mouse with no "mouse button". Instead of just tapping a tip of a finger, you have to PRESS it down with your whole palm. This takes getting used to. Also, it's a lot slower since there is greater inertia in your whole palm. So it kills the reflex time. Not very good for games.

I have been using the "buttonless" Apple mice since they came out with that design. I certainly don't need to click with any more than my index finger. My guess is maybe you aren't handling it correctly.
Regardless, a $5 or $15 mouse is hardly a reason to choose (or not choose) a computer. When my wife's mouse died (with the help of abuse from the kids) I went down and got a $15 replacement that had two buttons and a scroll wheel. I plugged it into the USB port on the keyboard and viola, the right button and scroll wheel worked automatically, with no software installation needed. I think it was a Kensington, but there are a ton of USB mice available.
