Total overall cost of ownership of a Mac is a lot less though. They tend to last much longer than PC's and have a higher resale value. They also come preinstalled with a ton of useful software that would cost you hundreds of dollars to install on a PC.
average g4 cost: 1500 last time i checked
average pc cost: 500
thats a 1000 dollars
Let's compare apples to apples OK? The G4 is not a model of Apple it is the CPU which is available in the Powermac, iMac and eMac. You can't compare a $500 PC to the Powermac but more to the eMac which is $799.
I was a total PC user until November of last year. I always used to reformat and re-install all the software every 6 months or so because Windows would get "bogged" down and ran better on a clean install. I owned an Apple II+ in the early 80's, but bought PC's in 1995 because that was what was being used in the business place. Last year I got tired of Windows and switched to Mac. All I can say is wow! Jaguar (10.3.4) is awesome and I am looking forward to the enhanced options going to be incorparated in the new Tiger release. I can share any file I want between my Mac and PC's and the Apple hardware is top notch.
Don't get me wrong, I still like and use PC's, but Mac's would be my machine of choice. We use PC workstations at work, I have 2 PC desktops running at home (custom built them myself), and I carry both a Mac (15.2" G4 Powerbook, 1 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB HD, and SuperDrive) and HP PC notebook computers. I use my PC's for proprietory work software, for AutoCAD applications, and for some games (Counter-Strike). Mac does have CAD software, but I just haven't spent the money to switch over. I am waiting for the G5 to be released in a notebook so I can upgrade my machine (don't really need to, but the cool factor of having the most powerful machine is irresistable). I am also plan on buying my children the eMacs since Mac has such great music and video editing software. Also the Office Mac offers almost seemless integration of Microsoft office applications. There are some Excel macros that will not run in Office Mac.
I'm forced to use Macs at work and I hate them and they are crap but I have to deal with a bunch of old slot loading (even a few really old tray loading) iMacs and G3's all running OS9 (work of the devil) so if I had better stuff I might not hate them so much. I have heard that OSX is a lot better and takes care of a bunch of the issues I hate with OS9 but I just grew up with PCs and I'm more comfortable and capable with them so that is what I own at home. Not to mention the fact that you get a lot more computer for your money when you buy a PC over a Mac now.
I think comparing G3's and OS9 to PC's would be the equivilant of running Windows 98 on a Pentium II machine. No wonder why you don't like them, it's pretty much out-dated today. Personally, I don't think I'd have switched to Mac with OS9, but OSX is awesome. When I get some free time I want to start using the Unix terminal in OSX.
I am on a Mac too/// G4 OSX Panther
Would never switch. I love my Mac, I am in the graphic design biz and it is a standard..

Hey TT,
Glad to see I'm not the only Mac user in here. Isn't the integration great, being Apple makes both the hardware and software? The iLife software bundle that's preinstalled is fantastic also. Would probably cost about $500 if purchased separately for PC's. And the fact that ALL Macs come with firewire ports.

Have you seen the 30" ones yet?
I am still not sold on the flat screens only because I fear you cannot calibrate them like I need to.. I have a 23" Lacie with a blue eye so my color is always on target. But I have to have color perfect so I need a new monitor every 2 to 3 years....
but those 30 inch ones look cool, and will all my tool palettes it would be nice to get rid of my second monitor...(use for tools)

I am an Apple Certified Technian as well as Certified in most PC fields.
AND
I HATE MACS they are the most stubborn and most difficult machines I have ever had to repair. They are getting better software wise and they have been great on multimedia, but they still have a long way to go in hardware and repairability.
just my 2 cents
