I run all home built PC's, hand me downs from my son the gamer. He builds them for himself, friends, business clients, etc, and occasionally for old dad. Mainly cutting edge game machines but some home/business machines and servers. He just sold his personal game machine to a college student for use in graphics design and is building another for his games.
I have had a couple of store bought PCs, the Micron was a good machine but the Compaq was junk. After those I sat down and built my own and showed my son how to do it. He has had fun every since.
I have tried to use Linux several times but at the time I could not find the drivers for my hardware.
i wanna see someone who actually does use a mac post up!
That would be me. I got tired of reformatting my Windows box every 6 months. I got tired of updating anti-virus software every month and the security issues, spyware, self installed programs, drivers, etc, etc....
A Mac is true plug and play and it just works right out of the box. They are used mainly as you say by graphic designers, but also heavily in the music and film industry and by science and engineering firms. The operating system is industrial strength Unix which is built Ford tough. Apple is slowly making its way into the business sector with its server hardware and Macs are compatible with PC's on business networks. I will admit however that if you are a hardcore gamer that software titles are limited for Macs, but for everything else they can't be beat. There are also many of you who prefer to tinker with your PC's and home build your own which is great, I used to do it myself. I just got tired of all the constant rebooting and driver updates blah blah blah. I have switched 5 years ago and would never use a Windows based PC again. I will admit that we have 1 PC in the house along with our 3 Macs. My son likes to play Counter Strike which is not available for Macs. Our Macs never crash or have to be rebooted. My Mac was last rebooted about 3 months ago.
I sympathize with you guys who are struggling with settings and reformatting and viruses and so on. I don't consider myself challenged as one of you mentioned, I consider myself smart. I prefer to spend my time using my computer as opposed to fussing with it all the time. If any of you have any questions about Macs you can email me and I would be glad to educate you.
And no, I don't drive a Chebbie!!!
End of rant..... let the flames begin.
MAC user also. bought a i-mac and glad i did. had a micron before that. love the size and graphics of the mac..one reasonably size unit.only seem to use it for writing and internet play but i'm sure it does a whole lot more it seems different than a reg computer. i just don't understand everything.......... hey dean , can you recommend a good book for this machine. not sure i even know about some of the basics either. i manage though. i think i'm sold.it's overpriced, but a nice machine....joezee
f150, for 300 bucks that is a pretty nice rig.
I use a Dell and eMachine(which isn't nearly as bad as I had expected it to be. Some cheap parts but nothing too bad.) I got the Dell from my old job. They were just gonna toss it Of course some #$%^# took the memory out of it but that was cheap to replace.
I too have tried Linux to no avail. The initial install is okay but adding anything afterwards is a pain.
Just got tired of the stability and security problems with Windows. I'm in IT, so I get enough of Windows issues at work. I don't want to fight all the same battles at home, too.
There are compromises to make no matter which system you choose. None of 'em is perfect yet. Just pick the one that fits the best.

Joe,
Are you talking about a book for the operating system or for the programs installed?
I'm forced to use Macs at work and I hate them and they are crap but I have to deal with a bunch of old slot loading (even a few really old tray loading) iMacs and G3's all running OS9 (work of the devil) so if I had better stuff I might not hate them so much. I have heard that OSX is a lot better and takes care of a bunch of the issues I hate with OS9 but I just grew up with PCs and I'm more comfortable and capable with them so that is what I own at home. Not to mention the fact that you get a lot more computer for your money when you buy a PC over a Mac now.
