351M; I believe that the Dodge tranny problems people are referring to just concern the tranny used behind the Cummins Diesel. The older transmissions such as the Torqueflite were not neccessarily any worse than most other automatics out there. Back in the early '80's I was a mechanic for a national truck rental company, we used Ford and Dodge. In the Van conversion units, maintenance was much higher with the Dodges than the Fords. I replaced 3 Dodge engines for every Ford, on an average. But the transmissions in both were pretty trouble-free. (I also found the Fords much easier to work on when doing a scheduled service.) Just my .05 worth...(adjusted for inflation) -TD
I enjoy Ford bashers, provided they sell me their Fords cheap!
My friend I do salvage with prefers Chevy 3/4 and 1-ton trucks, I like Fords, and our somewhat deranged buddy gets the Mopar parts...
Result is we all get the parts/trucks we want with no competition.
i tend to ignore ford bashers, i know there isn't much they can really say about my truck besides the old "have the spark plugs blown out of your heads yet?". i enjoy telling my ford-bashing buddies when they call me on my cell to come pull them out of the mud that "it probably wouldnt make it". let 'em hate. it's nothing new. competition is human nature. of course, my patience gets thin after a few brewskies.
I told another guy the other day to turn his diesel off. He said it wasnt a diesel. He said its a gas truck. Doggone piston slap. Those Chevies. I wasnt trying to bash. I didnt realize these trucks were that bad. Makes me glad Im driving a Ford.
Could be just the diesels, but as far as Dodges go, we have never been let down yet, except for the rear end in our 86, the spider gears went, other than that every dodge we have had has treated us well even with the way we abuse them. And yea we abuse all our trucks, like one diesel had no oil changes in 3 years, cheap truck and never had to put any money into it.
