electric choke feed

I installed a new Holley electric choke on my truck but i'm looking for a 12 volt feed that is only hot when the engine is running. I heard that the alternator stator connection is only 6-7 volts. Where can I find one. It's a '75 F150 390. Thanks.

The stator is the correct location to connect the electric choke. The voltage, whatever it may be, is enough to heat the choke coil.

Good luck,

Mark

Actually, I believe that the aftermarket Holley chokes are designed for 12v, and using the stator terminal will cause a slow pull-off, or it won't completely open. If you have a ceramic resistor for the coil, you can tap into the primary side of that, or just use a scotch-lock connector and hit the run lead off the key switch. Use a 10amp inline fuse so you don't melt down your truck.

Thanks for the replies guys. Here is what I ended up doing to hook it up. I didn't like the idea of running the power for the choke off of the ignition because if you leave the ignition on without the engine running the choke will burn up according to Holley. So I purchased a four prong relay (just a light/horn relay fron the parts store) and used the stator wire as the signal. Then I ran the other side of the relay to 12 volts. So i'm getting 12 volts and only when the engine is running. Works like a charm. The electric choke is a lot better than the old hand choke that was on it when I got it. The hand choke worked, but it was inconvenient.

My Holley's and Edelbrocks have always worked fine just using the stator wire.
The relay is a good idea too, though.

I got the choke wired up with a relay and now I have a slight problem. The choke opens way too fast. If I start it cold within a minute or two the choke is open. Seems too fast to me. By the time I start it and drive down the driveway to the road the choke is almost open. By the time I pull into the road it bogs because the choke is open and the engine is not warm yet. I have it set to 3 rich right now. I tried turning it way rich and it still pulls off too fast. I'm thinking of just doing like LXMan said and trying the stator wire. Maybe the lower voltage will make it pull off slower. If I just let it sit there and idle and warm up it does fine. But I never let it warm up...I just hit the road and it really runs a bit rough while accelerating. After I hit 55 it's fine. It's warm here now, and I don't know how it will do in the winter. The instructions specifically stated 12 volts, but seems too fast to me? Anyone else have that problem? It's a Holley electric choke kit with internal vacuum.

Seems like the 12 volt or 7 volt might be an issue. If you can't get it resolved, try giving Holley themselves a call.
