question about the speed sensor on the transfer case

Hi all,
I posted a question in another thread about my 4wd not engaging and about a heater question, but I was wondering something that someone posted in that thread.
They said it may be the speed sensor on the transfer case and I was just curius if it is the same kind of speed sensor you can get at a NAPA, AutoZone, or advanced auto parts store. (Not the ABS Speed Sensor). Because the cost is only between $25-$41 and that's a far cry from getting it from FORD. Thanks again.

Thanks,

question about the speed sensor on the transfer case

On a '95 explorer there are two magnetic speed sensors mounted on the back of the transfer case. One is for the rear driveshaft and one is for the Front. I just went through the same thing as you. If you still need help then post a reply.

I changed my rear sensor and now my 4wd works fine

question about the speed sensor on the transfer case

Where did you buy the sensors at and what part # were they? I would just like to get the 4x4 working again because I'm moving back to South east New York this winter and they get some decent snowfall. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thank you again.

Thanks,
Ledstang

question about the speed sensor on the transfer case

they are ford parts and any dealer should be able to get them for you.

I still have the boxes for my '95 EB.

the boxes have the following numbers on them, Sorry I don't remember which was which

Box 1:
SW-5644
1L2Z-7F293-BA

Box 2:
SW=5645
1L2Z-7F293-AB

The front sensor which I am going to return to Ford has the following Numbers on it
44-00-640-044-A
09700048

They were $30.00 each

The when you pick up the new sensors you'll see right away how to take the old ones off. Don't mix them up, the front and rear sensors have one lead that is a different color. also when you take them off make sure you don't get any debris in the transfer case (it is a good idea to change the fluid it only take 1.5 quarts of mercon transmission fluid)

The rear driveshaft sensor is a piece of cake to replace. It is right next to the fill plug for the transfer case. the sensor leads are part of a composite plug so I clipped the old leads. then butt-spliced the new sensor in. The I dipped the splices into liquid electrical tape. it should last longer than the truck.

The front driveshaft sensor is very hard to replace. It id directly above the drain plug behind the shift motor. You have to remove the harmonic damper and then remove the shift motor.here is a link to a site which has a few good shots of the shift motor http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/tcase.html (don't get confused the transfer case pictured is a 1354. it is identical to ours except it doesn't have these sensors or the electromagnetic clutch) the composite connector is for both sensors, the shift motor and one lead goes into the transfer case for the electro-magnetic clutch. because of this it is very hard to take the entire connector and all related componants more than a few inches from the vehicle. if you take the shift motor off make sure you have some RTV sealant (hi temp silicone) handy. it is for the mounting surface of the motor. An I would just clip the lead going into the transfer case. you can butt-splice it later and use the liquid electrical tape from Home-Depot to re-seal it later.

I got luck, it was my rear sensor that gave me the problem

I am going to try and Burn my local dealer because they gave me a $1750.00 qoute for a new transfer case and I believe they knew the sensor was bad. Luckily I am stubborn and thought they were giving me a line

good luck, If you need more info just reply , i have the shop manual which gives a dissasembled view of our(the 44-05) transfer case

question about the speed sensor on the transfer case

By the way it is not the same thing as the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) these sensors are magnetic. the VSS is a gear driven sensor

question about the speed sensor on the transfer case

Thanks again. I lived in Pine Bush. Its between Middletown and Poughkeepsie. Small town but nice people. Hoping to move back there this winter with some money so we can stay this time instead of falling on our faces again. Plus it'll be good for her to be by her family. But no 4x4, no go. Thanks.

question about the speed sensor on the transfer case

It's been a while since I looked, But I don't believe my VSS had a bare wire.

Is this the sensor mounted on the transfer case right near the rear driveshaft?

Does you speedometer work??

Do you get any error codes??

if everything is working then the wire might be a ground.

Is it the only wire going to the sensor??

Was your e-mail about the jumper wire?

I got an e-mail but when I replied it got bounced back. Something about a bad alias?

if yours was about the '96. then you have an ODB-II computer. you cant use the jumper wire. you need a code reader.

try sending to cnthor@optonline.net
