'01 Expedition - VSS Location

Vehicle: 2001 Expedition / 5.4L / 4WD

I have the vehicle speed sensor from Autozone part #SU2121 and was looking on the truck to replace it. The problem is, I can't seem to find it. Which after reading a few threads on this forum seems to be a kind of common part to overlook.

The Chilton's states its on the left side of the transmission. However, I've read on this forum that its on the transmission, transfer case, rear diff, wheel, behind the shift motor, etc.

Going down the left side from the front of the transmission I see the OSS near the top then the TR sensor. On the back of the transfer case I do see a sensor under the shift motor, but it sits flush with the transfer case housing. It looks there is also one more sensor at the top of the transfer case towards the rear wheel output shaft, but that one also sits flush with the housing.

Looking at the VSS in the box, it would appear the VSS would have to protrude out from whatever housing it was in about 3/4 of an inch (give or take). I don't see any sensors around the transmission or transfer case that stick out at all. All of them are flush with the housing.

What I thought would be about a 15 minute job seems to have taken about 3 hours of looking with no joy yet.

BTW, when the vehicle is traveling about 25 MPH or so, the speedometer reads ~45 MPH. Thus the reason to swap the VSS.

Thanks in advance,

Rush

The one on top of the rear diff appears to be the rear ABS sensor (this part)
I don't see any other sensors located on the rear diff.

Thanks,

Rush
