There are physically 6 gears.....it is a 6 speed transmission (both literally and at the software level). Gear six is in fact overdrive.
It is marketed as a 5 speed, and they call 5th overdrive at the marketing level.
(While accelerating, the 5th gear you hit IS overdrive, but this doesn't mean that it's "5th gear". 4th is skipped.
There are times that even 2nd is skipped during light acceleration.
I speak on the calibration level, not on the marketing level. I don't care about marketing; I care about what actually is.
Ford simplified by calling it a "5 speed" to "simplify" things (hahhahahah!) because only 5 gears are used during acceleration.
It is a 6 speed tranmission, but it only uses 5 of those gears for upshifting
1,2,3,5,6
6th is in fact overdrive.
I promise you, there are 6 forward gears in the transmission.
If you want to count reverse we can make it 7 =o)
The best I have read…..Jim I am going to cut this and some time in the future……when it comes up elsewhere, I will paste it in.
I am telling you now, going to plagiarize it. Hope that is OK
I understand the concern about will it work...
but if there is a 30 day money back trial perioed, is it REALLY important to KNOW before hand ?
Bob, I'm now thinking of trying this too ! So if you want to be "first to market" you best hurry :-)
Yes, its a good idea to check first. Because although you get your money back we lose money paying someone to key it, process it, pack it and ship it. Plus the credit card fees (about $8-$9). Then paying someone to receive it, unpack, inspeck it, key in a refund and more credit card fees to process the refund. The money comes off of someone's dinner table, and I know my family likes to sleep in doors and eat three meals a day!

I'm with you Ken, I really don't want the hassle and don't want to put you through it. I can beat Adams any ole day, or maybe some day since I haven't beat him the first time yet!

You know the trick about the potato up the exhaust, well just get a watermelon
Strategically place the melon, make sure you drive on his left side, it will be monumental when it finally releases the summertime delight.

I had a great deal of fun a few fourth of Julys ago lighting off some class A and B fireworks INTO a watermelon instead of shooting them out of their proper mortar.
Cut a nice little hole, tuck it in, leave the wick out, cap it and roll it over so the wick is on the bottom.
After a little movement and a loud "whuump", we all looked disapointed until after a brief silence, the watermelon blew up and splattered worse than body parts from the animated parts of the movie Kill BIll. =o) There was also a beautiful array of color from the fireworks =o)
What does this have to do with the 1704?
Absolutely nothing...
but we did waste about 10 watermelons and completely trashed my friends pool area =o)
I finally was able to exibit some self control and drive (for a short period of time) at part throttle. What a big improvment over stock. Better throttle response, better shift points, all around much more responsive.
I've been hanging out in this forum for several weeks now. Lots of good info! Thanks to all. I just ordered my Superchips 1704 from Motorhaven. Backordered . Can't wait to try it out. It will be used to tune my March 2003 build Crewcab 4X4 King Ranch. I have to get a new flash first (there goes my Tow Haul). I hope to post the results soon!

Try it first before you have it reflashed. You may have a DAXO flash like mine and it may work.
