My new one is blue also. It has a rib on the inside to match the groove on the pipe on one end and a groove to match the rib on the turbo outlet on the other. It has a VERY slick surface, so I roughed it up with emory cloth then cleaned it with brake cleaner. I added the adhesive to make it tacky and put it on. I've had no more trouble.
I bought some rubber gloves at Walmart and a set of rachet wrenches which helped but when I got back home I bought some Mechanix gloves which stay in the truck all the time. You are right, it is VERY HOT and the radiator shroud is very hard on the knees.
The parts man in Canby, said the guys around there took the pipes to a muffler shop and had them flare the end.......said it stopped the problems.
With what you decribed BOB I know have the new type....and one spare of every tube hose in the trailer. Did not know the old ones had no rib....
The knees thing, I can only imagine what it looked like from the other side of the road…a guy with his butt stuck up in the air…hood open…no other part of the body showing….obviously the passers by could only think the Ford just ate him…took my driving suit and made a knee pad.
Now Tim, I was doing just fine without that VISION. Sitting here minding my own bidness. Attentively reading the posts after being in Houston a couple days. Even wondering what the kids have in store for me for my birthday dinner tonight. Basiclly having a pleasent day.
Now...thanks to you, I have this VISION stuck in my head of C. Bob's butt hanging out from under the hood. Not only that but a song now comes to mind that won't go away.
My 04 blew the hot air side (black plastic tube) off several months ago while under load going up hill. Put tow very noticable dents in hood (no hood mat from factory). Took it to Gwinnett Place Ford in Duluth, GA and they replaced with a metal tube and blue clamp. Service advisor said they use the the 7.4L part. All was covered under warranty including repair to hood. Going to inquire about the hood mat......
My 04 did not have the hood blanket when I picked up the truck . I mentioned the noise ordernance act that I had seen mentioned here before . My dealer ordered me a blanket and 3 more for the trucks on the lot that didint have them . I dont remember what the thread was . Maybe someone will remember and chime in . The act states that the diesel engines must have the blankets installed to keep the noise down . Good luck !!!
My O4 dually has a build date of early Oct. 03 and now has about 22K miles mostly towing a 32 fiver or a 21' boat. It has a full complement of gauges and consistently pegs the 30 lb. boost gauge. By the by it is pure stock other than the gauges. It has the metal pipe with the black rubber connectors with the ridges. The connection at the metal elbow leading to the intake system is a problem. I put it back on six times one day in Indiana on a trip around the US. I couldn't find a dealer with time/parts to fix it and I was on a time deadline on that part of the trip. I replaced it, tightened it and ran a wire around the screw head on the clamp and then around the aluminum elbow. It's not very elegant but I finished a 10,000 mile trip around the US without any more problems.
My 04' F250 doesn't have the under hood blanket, but my brother'n law's 03' does...?
I couldn't find specifics about the "noise ordinance act" in FTE. Anyone have information on that before I go to the dealer asking questions?
I appreciate all of you that have mentioned the intercooler tubes and troubles you've had. I haven't had a problem, but I'll be checking clamp tightness this weekend. I do have some oil on the underside of my hood that at my first service/oil change should have been attended to. I thought that my oil filter O-ring may have been leaking. Now I know what other things to look at.
I never would have thought that there'd be erl seeping from the intercooler tubes. Next I'll shoot the ole shotgun to the ground and black gooey crude will come bublin up!

Reason: Forgot something...
The last time I towed my 30’ TT I blew the hose of 4 times in the rain. I think the second time I had only made it a mile before it went off again. The odd thing about it was it blew off at the turbo flange not on the down tube. Any way the dealer changed the whole down tube, blue tubes in all.

Knee pads now that is an idea. I some how got one leg up with my foot on the battery and the other leg on the radiator. I felt like a pretzel. Did I mention that I am 6’4”.
I found it . Its from the Diesel Suplement pages 46, 47 , 48 . The thread I remember it from was May 15 , 2004 . #17

Wow ! I need to work on my copy and paste technique . Anyway , this is what I showed my dealer and he said no problem . We will get ya a blanket installed . Some have said that the 2003 "PI" was quite enough to eliminate the blanket . However when Ford eliminated the "PI" . The sound increased enough to force the blankets to be installed . Now that was back in May when I bought my truck . It could be different now . Ford may have found a way around this .
I cleaned it up a bit for you TimL

I've got the aluminized pipe, with the blue rubbers that have the rib in them, (03 truck) had it blow off twice. The way I fixed it, was took a pair of channel locks and flaired out the end of the aluminized tube whare the clamp could no longer "slip" off. That was almost 9000 miles ago, no problems since then. Was better and quicker than the dealer could fix it. Did I mentoin that I just got it out of the shop after the 30,000 mile service when the blowoff's started? I wonder if they "snugged her up a little bit just in case" Was tryin to outrun a hurricane when this crap started, kinda bad timing, but I am a mechanic so after the second blowoff in 5 miles, I modified the tube a bit. Was easy, but you have to take the tube all the way off.

Make sure you have the latest blue hose from Ford that prevents blowoff.
