Im learning about cars at this point of my life (im 15) and i am fixing to start working on my 1974 f-100, and theres a big hole in my exhaust header. My dad said he allready has another header for me and all i need to do is change it out.
How hard is this? how do i go about it? what should i do first? thanks for yalls help in advanced im new to this working on trucks thing. THANKS
well, the first thing to do is to compare the headres and make sure that they are bent the same. Different brands are made different and you may have to have the exhaust altered to hook back up. They usually go in from the bottom when installing them. Sometimes you have to jack the motor up on the side that you are installing to get them in. A good set of gaskets will be needed too.
no
The motor can stay in. I recommend getting some good penitrating lub before you try to remove the bolts or you will end up snapping them off. Some of the best (extremely harmfull) is going to the pharmace and picking up a bottle of pure wintergreen. Get a glass eye dropper (plastic will melt) and place a drop or two on the bolts and treads. Then walk away. Don't get this stuff on you or anything else. I used this stuff on exhaust bolts from a late 70's jeep from up north and after the first turn of the wrench could tack the bolts out be hand.
well heres the scoup. My dad just gave me a 1974 f-100 to fix up before i get my driver L. Its not the stock engine. the engine thats in it was pulled from a lincon. Its a 302. My dad told me yesterday when i start working on it theres a big hole in the header. I was like WHAT, then i was mad beouse now i needed the money for a new haeder. But then he told me he has a new header in the back of the truck, it just needs to be replaced. My dad knows a lot about cars so i bet its the right header. thats about it. The trucks been siting for 5 years but ran when he parke it. It will need some work.
When putting headers on these trucks with 302 or 351w the drivers side will
be the easy side it looks like the harder side but its not , the drivers side will
just about fall in form the top the only snag I have ran in to is there is a small
bracket that holds two brake lines that on some headers it will rub ,if you cut
it off on the end now it will not rub a hole later ,some trucks dont have that
bracket . Now for the more diffcult side take the motor mount nut off and put
a jack under the pass side of motor pick a good spot and put some wood
inbetween the jack and the motor so you dont bend anything jack it up i would say 3 to 4 inches and your header should fall in from the top, you can
see when its ready to slide by the bulge that stick out from the starter .
