My ABS light is on and I checked the fluid. It was a little low and kinda gray colored. I added some fluid but it did not turn off the light. My pads look good, so is there any other easy things to check before taking it to the dealer? I have 250,000 miles on this truck in case that helps.
You may want to try and reset the abs light by resetting the computer (disconnecting the negative battery cable for 1/2 hr or so). Re-connect and see after you start the truck if the abs light comes back on, if it doesn't try driving locally for a while and do stop and go's and see if it pops back on. Have you checked the rears? could they be low? I'm not sure if the abs light goes on if they are?
Look at thisthread concerning the rear speed sensor. My abs light was on and it turned out the rear speed sensor was the problem. A $20 part and 15 minutes to change it.
Rear sensor in top of differential had chips(junk) on it and caused this problem. Cleaned, but Needed new sensor, common problem. easy to change. My dash ABS light came on after a few feet of movment of the truck. I jacked up front tire one at a time to simulate movement, trouble shot to rear - only one sensor - this was easy.
By far the most common fix seems to be the vehicle speed sensor on the differential.
around 20 bucks at your favorite ford dealer and 10 to 15 minutes to replace it. only 1 bolt. 3/8" I think.
