I installed a Hypertech chip last Wed. I just wanted to let everyone know, if your looking for a solid way to improve HP, shifting, And fuel economy this is the way to go! I was pondering what kind of chip to install in my Expy. I walked into my local Advance auto and was talking to a friend of mine. He asked my if I had found a chip yet. I told him that I hadn't and he then informed me that he had one. He said $50 was what he wanted for it! I told him to bring it by the house! I installed it last wed and have driven the truck just as hard as possible since install! I looked at the mileage yesterday and to my surprise I had picked up 2.3 MPG!!!!!! The shifts are crisp and smooth, the idle is nice and smooth, and acceleration has increased dramatically! This is by far the easiest mod done to date with the most performance gain! Also one little side note.... I have gotten these increases with the same fuel that was in the tank.... 87 octane. Hypertech requires premium on the chip instructions, I figured I would run out whats in the tank and then fill with premium. I haven't experienced any "pinging" or detonation under acceleration and all is fine in the world. With #'s like this I don't know if I want to use premium especially with the cost of fuel at $2.45 for premium.
I went to the Hypertech web site and put that product number in, but it came up as an invalid number. How did you get that as the correct number? Do you know what number I would use for the 98 Expedition? Where exactly is the chip installed within the vehicle? Thanks
The part # came straight off the box that the chip came in. As far as location... The chip plugs into the service port in the ECM. It is located under the dash on the passenger side of the vehicle. You will need to remove the kick panel and it is behind there. In order to remove the ECM you need to remove the battery and the battery tray. Then there is a harness going into the fire wall. It has a 10 mm bolt on it. You loosen the bolt and unplug the harness then go inside and release the clip that holds the ECM into place. Once removed you will see a plastic cover over the service port. Pry this cover off carefully and clean the contacts as recommended by Hypertech. I used Acetone and a small screwdriver to scrape the contacts clean. They are covered with a gooey wax coating that needs to be removed. Hope this helps!
I'm sorry to hear that. On the other hand.... the programmer or controller will do the same thing as the chip. Instead of having to go through the trouble of removing the ECM all you need to do is plug it into your diagnostic port under the dash! It is easier to use and most have a built in code scanner. If I were buying one full price I would have purchased a programmer. I got mine from a friend for $50!
