With break depressed engine started the shifter wont release(wont pull toward me)? If I turn engine off and turn ignition to on without starting it shifter will release and I can move it toward me and hold it (or shift to neutral) then start the car and move to desired gear?
is this an ignition switch problem or the shifter lock mechanism problem? I know there is a solenoid which holds the shifter until break is depressed and switch is in run position right?
oh yeah...I also dont understand if this shift interlock solenoid thing is the problem why I can shift into N or get it out of park with the ignition switch just clicked over to the first position?
The inter lock works off the brake light signal, no brake lights no shift. The interlock uses power to lock the shifter. When you just click the ignition to the first position, the interlock has no power.
I found the problem! I checked the brake fuse and it was blown. Replaced the fuse and column unlocked and brake lights came on....PROBLEM was once I did this smoke started pouring out from under the hood and the fuse blew again!
The smoke was coming from some kind of sensor mounted on the front of the brake master cylinder which has a connection which leads to the power distribution box (or as far as I can see it goes there) This sensor is all melted and there is some brake fluid in the connection which I assume was making the smoke. I assume if I replace this sensor the problem will be fixed.
Can someone tell me what this sensor is (maybe antilocks?) Is it safe to drive with it unplugged? I have noticed over the past few weeks the brakes being very sensative (they are new brakes).
that sensor is probably the easiest thing to replace on your truck. I had to replace it on my '95. When you take that "shift lock solenoid thing" back to the dealer, just get the brake sensor switch. I think mine was around $25. Just unscrew the old one, screw in the new one, plug it back in and you're done. Also, your cruise control won't work without it.
