What about the Cold Start valve? (Do they still use one? I'm not really up on newer F.I. systems, but there used to be a Cold Start valve, usually located in the intake plenum somewhere behind the throttle body that gave an extra squirt of fuel for cold starts. The F.I. answer to the choke.)

Sorry, I may have given you some bad advice. Looking through my Haynes manual, I don't see anything like a cold start valve. Possibly they have done away with it and the cold start enrichment is handled by the computer telling the injectors to stay open a little longer or something like that...just a guess. My manual only covers the 4.0 up to '92, I don't know how different the '99 is, and they don't give much info anyway. Another guess: Possibly the coolant temp. sensor is bad, telling the computer that the engine is already at operating temp. and doesn't need that extra shot of fuel. Or maybe they go bad the other way and run it too rich all the time, I don't know. How 'bout it anyone? Can someone who knows more than me about all this please help this guy? I may be only blowing hot air here...!

Have your battery tested if its beggening to go and producing less CCA it will cause longer starting thats the ezest thing to test, take it to pep boys or auto zone they will test it for you for free

Might be a weak fuel pump Simple test: cycle the key on for 2 seconds then off then on 2 seconds. Do this 5 times & then see if it will start.
Tiger dan mentioned the coolant temp sensor, some say that can cause hard cold starts & some say not. Simple test for that is to remove the connector from the sensor & see if it starts.

If the Cold Temp Sensor doesn't work right, it's like trying to start a carturated engine without a choke.
(Unplugging it won't help...it STILL won't start)

I could be wrong, but the way I understand this is the CTS is either open when engine is cold or it's closed when engine is hot. If this is correct opening the circuit by removing the connector should be the same as an open/cold sensor. Not so????

I just bought a Chilton's manual today, and it has a chart giving resistance values for specific temperatures, I.E: 50 degrees F. - 58.75 K ohms, 122 F. - 10.97 K ohms, 212 F. - 2.07 K ohms. So as the temperature goes up, the resistance goes down. So it's not just on/off. They also give good directions for testing, so Byron, if you don't have one already I would suggest picking up a manual and a digital multi-meter. Also, have you checked the codes on your computer? -TD

So high resistance equals rich for cold starts & low resistance leans it out. Makes sense, Thanks for clearing that up.
