I have a tapping noise that only pops up during cold starts in the fall/winter. The noise usually is heard when the truck is being started for the first time in the morning or when it has been sitting a while. The noise is very audible as the truck is warming up, but goes away completely after it has been driven a few miles.
I use motorcraft 5W-20 and motorcraft filters. I understand all engines take time to circulate oil on cold starts but this noise seems excessive.
Anyone experienced similar problems with their 5.4s?
I own a 2006 f150 5.4 liter w/115,000 plus miles on it. I use nothing but Mobil 1 5w-20 & Fram filters and change them every 6000 miles. This vehicle is mostly for commuting with an occasional tow of a small (20') travel trailer.
A cold start-up tapping has also occured in my engine since the last oil change (coincidental?). It is very loud for the first minute then dissipates as the engine warms. The noise appears to be from the passenger, rear top side of the engine.
I've read too many blogs about spark plugs, manifold leaks and cam phasers and would like to hear from others who have the same tapping noise but had it diagnosed and fixed.
I've heard this with non Motorcraft oil filters. A lot of the after market oil filters don't have a check valve and allow oil to leak down over night. Once oil pressure builds up the noise goes away. Bothers me as well, but I have over 157k on my truck and still seems to run strong.
