Saw a tube of mobil 1 synthetic grease in the parts store yesterday. I like mobil 1 oil and think it does a better job in protecting the motor but I was wondering if anyone had used the mobil 1 grease for balljoints, tie rods or wheel bearings and what they thought of it. ("I'm about to do a brake job including new rotors on my van, and since that means I'm replacing the races I think I'm going to replace the bearings as well)
I think it resists oxidation beter than petroleum. I know it resists heat a lot better. I use it exclusively for wheel bearings... I tend to heat the brakes sometime. I doubt it makes a difference on suspension joint life, though.
I have long used the Mobil 1 grease. I think it is very good grease, but actually, I am just projecting from the Mobil 1 oil. My useage of grease is so small, that the cost is not noticeable.
You should know, however, that Mobil 1 grease does NOT meet the Ford spec for wheel bearings. I'm sure it would work, but it does not contain the Moly component that the Ford spec requires. I now use a Valvoline synthetic grease that does also contain Moly, and so meets the Ford spec.
Mobilgrease 28 synthetic aircraft grease mainly has advantages in extreme cold, as is found at high altitiude. I would think the automotive product would also work best in extreme cold. I use the Valvoline because it meets the Ford spec.
