Hey all...need some input....I'm wanting to change the oil in my transfer case before winter....So Ford has special Transfer case fluid as we all know....Does everyone use this? Or has anyone used say Amsoil or Mobil 1 trans fluid in the t-case. I'm thinking of using the Mobil 1 synthetic trans fluid maybe. Thoughts?
Probably doesn't matter really but i'd use the motorcraft transfer fluid I don't think synthetic is really gonna make much if any difference in a transfer case it either works or it doesn't. Just my 2 cents.
did some googling since I am about to change mine again. No clear answer except that ford recomendations seem to be linked to current license agreements...meaning...the answer is different for the same vehicle depending what year you ask.
best bet is to buy the ford transfer case fluid...you can get it on line if now where else.
Alot of GM guys use synthetic 5W-30 oil in T-cases. Some T-case rebuilders recommend this too. Not sure how a Ford T-case would like it. Maybe even a 0W-20 synthetic. From the years worth of reading I've done it seems the motor oil does a better job than ATF in T-cases. But don't do this without doing alot of research.
I bet the special Transfer Case fluid is plain old Dex/Merc ATF. They probably call it that since the transmissions now require LV or SP or whatever.

I use whatever the owner's manual calls for. I really see no benefit to deviating from this. The Fomoco fluids are no more difficult to obtain than any other brand.
I ended up going with the Royal Purple Syncromax oil. Transfer case is quieter when in 4x4 going down the road....used to have a slight hum...haven't heard the hum since changing the oil.
