Overclock - each CPU is tested to dermine a safe clock speed for it, then the manufacture sorts and sends 'em out... then folks get their PCs, want some more speed, so they delve into their PCs & manually set the clock speed of the PC to something higher. This is for the most part harmless since many CPUs can handle it - but they run hotter and require attention to cooling/fans/etc... Example: You have a PIII 600Mhz, then OVERCLOCK it to 750Mhz... faster, but runs hotter as well...

02superstroker,
processors run at a certain speed and are certified to perform at that speed. On many motherboards you can set the clockspeed higher than the processor rating and thus overclock your processor.
Example: your processor is rated for 1,000MHz, but you set the motherboard in your computer to force the processor to run at, say, 1,200MHz. This is fairly easy to do on many motherboards. And many processors are capable of handling increased clockspeed without fault. HOWEVER: increasing clockspeed over what the processor is rated at, normally causes it to run hot (temperature wise).
NOT recommended for the average computer user!

02superstroker,
good idea! Increasing clockspeed is not necessarily going to give you much more performance.
Upping memory to 512MB+, if you are running XP, however is. Memory is cheap and with XP it will give you much better performance.
Making sure you are running one of the new 7,200RPM or even 10,000RPM harddrives with serial ATA and as much cache (like 8M) as possible will also give you a significant amount of more "omph". If you want to go nuts, you can even go with one of the new 15,000RPM SCSI drives, but that opens a totally new can of worms.
It is all about balancing your computer: The fastest processor will do you no good at all, if you have a slow harddrive, not enough memory, slow transfer rates, etc.
Regards

02superstroker,
512 and 2.8 sounds just fine to me. Then, no computer is ever fast enough. Try upping your memory to one GIG, you might be surprised. This just might be a totally new way of spending money.

I'd like to, but the two sit too far apart right now. When I move back home at the end of the summer, they'll be right next to each other, so I'll be doing it then.
