computer registry help needed

My computer is running slow,it is not my internet connection, the internet works fine. I have no spyware or virus problems. I think there might be some things in my registry that don't need to be there. It has been so long since I have checked it,I forgot how to access it on my computer. I also used to know of a web site that told what the stuff in there means, can any one lead me to some of those? thanks,Ben

Click on: 'Start', then 'Run' and type in regedt32. This will start the registry editor. If you are not 100% sure of what you're doing, find someone who does or you'll be reinstalling everything on your PC.

alot of times wiping and reinstalling is the best solution... but wiping really doesnt affect me because i dont have anything on any of my computers that matters to me. i just threw together a win95 machine today... still working out a couple bugs- getting drivers for the old hardware and stuff- but runs quick and well

"The Registry" seems to get blamed a lot for slow running computers. If your PC is slow because it takes a long time for programs to find registry settings, deleting just a few isn't going to make that big a difference. You need to delete a lot. Though cleaning the registry does often remove entries that run programs at startup, like spyware and viruses. I'd look at the Task Manager-Process tab to see if something you don't expect to see is using CPU time. Look at the Performance tab too. See how much total memory is being used. If you're using more memory than installed, using virtual memory, it will run slow. A network problem can make it run slow too, such as it can't find a PC that has a drive mapped to it. Also, look in the system tray, the area on the far right of the task bar. My in-laws install every piece of junk software that prompts them for an install. Everytime we visit, I have to clean up their PC.

what i always do is hit ctrl-alt-del and look at the task manager- see whats actually running... if anything seems out of place or theres something there you dont use or need, remove it... if i shut everything i can down and its still running crappy ill reformat and start over

tuneup utilities is a great cleaning/optimizing program, you can prob download a trial version, or just buy it.

DONT use regedit unless you really know what you're doing though.

also, like others have said, try "ctr alt del" and see what's running. you can tweak you're start-up programs if need be.

you can also try running scandisk/checkdisk and defrag. that might help.

good luck

thanks for the ideas so far. i did the ctrl-alt-delete and it says i have 43 processes running. does that sound like to many? the cpu usage jumped to 90% a couple times, but it usually stays around 5-8%. I will try some of the other things mentioned when I have time,I have to get some sleep now if i am going to make it to work tonight

> ctrl-alt-delete

Just right click in the task bar and select task manager so you can watch while running programs. Look for Adobes ACROREAD32. That slows down a lot of things.

I would suggest a thorough cleaning. Run disk cleanup, find the rest of the temp and temp internet files, cookie etc and get rid of them. Virus scan and a defrag.

I do my clean ups weekly and full maint about once a month, keeps things running smooth.

You didn't mention what operating system or comp specs so I can't be more helpful.

Good luvk

Rich

Hard to say just by number, you can download the program Hijackthis , get a list of running processes and PM it to me.

My work is sporadic at the mo so I may not be able to respond immediately, but there is a forum type site 'somewhere' that you can post that log to and they will help you out if you have any malicious software on your PC.

Running system restore can really clog up a computer. I turn it OFF for all drives.

what i would recommend is doing a few things ... startup ... deletete everything out of start/programs/startup ... its unnessicary .. go into start/run type in msconfig .. go to the startup tab ... uncheck any programs that arnt nessicary .. if you dont know what it is leave it alone but programs like yahoo msn stuff like that uncheck it ... download spybot search and destroy update it and run it .. this will delete spyware on your computer which will slow you down and it will search the registry for spyware also ... great program ... this will be a good start also as they said disable system restore.. its useless if you get a problem that big that you wanna use it it dosnt ever work right... hmmm what else .. well a virus scan and defrag are always good aswell as a chk disk which you can run from the system menu you access by right clking on my computer and going to properties ... that should be a hell of a start
