Shut the computer off????

Is it best to shut the computer off at night or leave it running?

I have DSL and a software base firewall. There isn't anything important on the computer, but I don't want to have any problems either.

I always left mine on but my wife turnsit off. i'm not a tech by any means but I would leave it on. I'm too impatiant to wait to reboot. Now I have a laptop and shut it down for the obvious reason.

I shut mine off just in case something decides to catch fire.

Mine stays on unless we're going to be gone awhile. The laptop, which I am just figuring out, gets shut down as soon as we're done.
Never noticed any difference with the PC, the laptop gets warm after a while though.

I have to go through the most interesting startup so I decided to leave it on.

some of my Windows XP files are corrupted due to spyware, I don't want to reformat right now so its just gonna stay that way for a while.

I did shut the computer down for energy useage reasons, this computer uses 325Watts at full draw, and thats quite a bit of juice.

So as part on an environmental effort, I do shut down my computer when I can.

I have the DSL system also but i shut it down at night or if i'm not using it for a half hour or so.It's fast enough to bring back up rather quickly and it gives the fan and working components kind of a breather.I love the DSL system.we were having a lot of problems with servers.we pay 28 bucks a month which i feel is reasonable for the speed we get and it is an easy hookup.we run 2 computers on ours.

I have 2 on a cable modem both get turned off at night, the computer in the computer room starts fast the modem is also here, in my bedroom is our old one it gets used less, the modem also gets turned off, they need rest too

And there is the obvious money and energy wasted, and the thought of fire, i think my computer room is still on **** and tube wiring and my house would go up like a christmas tree

We also turn off the lights as me move from room to room, we did burn christmas lights from sundown till 10pm for 2 weeks

I usually turn the monitor off. If my server is running, I leave it on, but, shut the others off. Every once in a while I shut everything off from the UPS including the router to break any unknown connections.

Out of concern for fire (monitor) I turn mine off. If I'm going to leave for a bit, I'll put it on "sleep" and turn off the monitor and cable modem.

Some people feel that longevity is promoted by not turning them off; myself, I have not seen proof though but everytime you turn it on there's another on/off cycle in the machines life. On the other hand, computers become obsolete fairly fast so IMHO longevity is not an issue.

I turn mine off every night when I'm ready to crawl to bed.
As for the corruption due to spyware, there are programs that can remove spyware even if it's installed prior to loading the program. I'm a firm believer in Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, both backed up with Adaware 6.0.

all three of my computers stay on 24/7 but the monitors shut off after 20mins. all of them do distributed computing projects, the watercooled 1.8 GHz AMD, 1.7GHz AMD, and the pentium 2 266MHz overclocked to 333MHz.

I leave all mine on. I do however, turn the monitors off when going to bed, or work, or school. The server has been up for 66 days without crashing, running windows!! As a computer tech, I have heard all the arguments on wether or not it is best to leave it on, to reduce wear and tear of turning components on and off, or to shut it off, to reduce energy consumption, and parts wear and tear. It doesn't matter. There is no difference between leaving it on 24/7 like me, or turning it off when you are done. You should however, turn the monitors off when sleeping ,or working, or away for over 3 hours. Because it will save the tube inside the monitor. I have had a few go bad becuase we didn't turn them off.
