I just replaced the speakers and head unit in my wifes 98 explorer. What a difference!!! I put (4) 6x8 infinity reference speakers and a pioneer head unit in. The speakers(all) were under $150. I got'em at best buy. You will also need adapters for the new speaker connections unless you cut off the factory harness. The adapters are only like $6 bucks a pair.Might as well do it right. You can get a pioneer deck around $100 at wal-mart. It's alot better than stock. But you do not have to replace the head unit if you don't want to. But that's what I suggest. You'll be impressed.
Pioneer has a great set of speakers. Stamped on the edge it says Ford products 6x8 Got them at Wal-Mart 2 for 60 bucks the sound GREAT took about 15 min to put in. Everything I like cheep quick and great value.
Was the impedance on the aftermarket speakers the same as the factory speakers? I have the MACH 460 system in my car and I want to put aftermarket speakers too.
To find out for any vehicle what size speakers your car will hold for front or back use www.crutchfield.com i think they are high priced most fo time but you can get the sizes from them as you select your vehicle before it shows you what type of speakers.
The Infinitys are nice. They are actually 5x7's, but come with a 6x8 adapter ring. They are efficient 92db/1 watt and have aimable tweets. www.ikesound.com is a inexpensive place to get them. They are 4 ohms.
There are two websites that can help you comparison shop for audio equipment online (or anything for that matter). You can shop by brand, price, etc. They compare prices from various stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, Ike Sound, (to name a few). www.BizRate.com www.Shopping.com
Click on car or automotive when you get to these sites.
Hope this helps you find a great deal on speakers.
