Factory Stereo--Amplifier

98 Expy. Does the factory stereo in an XLT with the four speaker configuration have an amplifier external to the radio? I had one speaker not functioning, I replaced the speaker wire and the speaker works but the volume is considerably lower than the other three speakers still using the factory wiring. the only thing I can think of is there is an amplifier in the system that I am bypassing with the new wire.

Where did you connect the new wire? Not the same place as the old?

My '00 didn't have an external amp until I added one.

No, the factory stereo doesn't have an external amp for the four speakers, it's all built into the stereo

Your new speaker is probably a differnt ohm load than the others, thus not getting as much power

What's Up Folks?
I purchased a used '98 Expy in Feb06 and now the subwoofer(rear) is not putting out any bass. I am on my way out the door to play with buttons (3&5)
I'd like to connect my own speaker in replacement of the factory "enclosed" subwoofer but I don't know if the connector on the amplifier next to the subwoofer will fit my speaker.
Does anyone Know?

On a'98 XLT there is an amplifier located on the firewall ahead of the center floor console. Requires removing console to gain access.

Rear Bass

Hey Dav-

your problem is similar to an issue I have been having with my truck for about a year. I bought a used 98 Expy/Eddie Bauer, and the rear sub woofer blew out, and I now have no BASS. I want to replace the subwoofer, but I am unclear on how to access the rear speaker. I know that the speaker was located on the rear passenger side, but it seems REALLY HARD to get too. Can someone who has replaced this speaker or added a new subwoofer for bass PLS HELP....
Thanks

The stereo in my 98 XLT did have a amplifier mounted on the firewall behind and below the stereo. I had one speaker not functioning. I decided to replace the stereo and it still did not function so I ran a new wire to the speaker. Now it functioned but not at teh same volume as the other three which led me to believe there was an amp. After tearing the console out I was able to get to the amp. I remove all of the ouput wires from the amp and connected the stereo ouput directly to the speaker input bypassing the amp. The replacement stereo was installed at circuit city using a wiring harness adapter that took high level amplified signal and fed it into the amp to be amplified again. The result was a poor sounding system. The stereo had low level outputs, but for some reason the installer did not use them. Now everyone is happy, my daughter has funtioning rear speakers and my wife can use her ipod as an input to the new stereo.

My expy does not have the version with the subwoofer and I do not know anything about how to replace it.

98 Exp EB Subwoofer

I just replaced my factory deck with a system hardwired to my Ipod and also installed a Delphi Roady XT. The installation guys noticed that the factory subwoofer was blown. I never really had it loud enough before to notice. It is located in the rear passenger side. When I took the cover off it looks like it is connected to its own amp and the subwoofer is screwed into a plastic case. I took the screws off the grill of the speaker but am still unable to remove it. Sounds like the subwoofer going bad is a common problem. Has anyone ever removed and replaced it?

Had the same problem with my 97 XLT Expedition. It has an "Internal Amp" and i had an amp installed for my mids and high's and the first "Mickey Mouse" Stereo shop I had an amp installed in, wired it straight to the factory amp, causing horrible noise and a nasty whine.. When I took it to a real shop, they found the problem and bypassed the amp.

Sounds amazing.

Jrouse. I own an Eddie Bauer Exp, and I am not sure if the config is the same for the XLT??? I can say that when the installer was hooking the wiring up for the new sub, and the back factory (blown) subwoofer was exposed, there was an amp directly next to it...which he said I could use for another sub in the future, if I desired. He bypassed that amp and just used the wiring near it to hook up the new amp w/ the new sub. I know that didn't answer your question...but maybe provided some insight. Good luck!

davidrhulingsr. I just posted a thread that I think addresses your issue. My "enclosed" sub blew about 3 months after I purchased my used 98 Expy, and I recently installed a new sub behind my 3rd seat with a measly 1k watt amp..but the amp that was right next to my "enclosed" sub didn't look like it would handle any serious power. just my observation. Good Luck!

THANKS for the great info fellas! Although I just replaced the sub in my Expy, you guys responded with some great advice. I just wish I knew about this forum earlier. Peace and Blessings to all!
