warm up
I have a rule of 1 minute - with 'easy' start out. This pretty much guarantees that the oil pressure is up, etc. Get in and start it up, then I go through the usual checks {seat belt, mirrors, guages} and by that time nearly a minute has gone by.
When I travle North in Canada or Alaska then I extend this.
If your going to zoom onto a freeway or tow then I would probably be extending my 1 minute rule.
Cool down..
This can be a big deal. Anyone who has been in fire service, marine, etc. and know their eq. "always" do a cool down. I don't know about the PSD engine, but the turbo burn out is such a problem is why some manuf's place a keyoff electric oil pump that comes on for about 3 minutes after you turn off the key, just to keep oil moving since if you doing anything other than ideling your engine when you turn it off the turbo is still spinning. Most of the trouble is dry bearing/overheated oil due to hot turbo that is still spinning. Also you have an expensive diesel and a general cooldown will help normalize high temps in the engine so you don't have real hot parts stopping next to cooler parts.
If you just run to the store I don't worry so much about the cool down, but think about the last 5-15 minutes of driving and if you have been pushing things along {need not be GVW either} then cool it down.
